    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I found a Sept 1944 obituary for a Michael J. Cahill in the Troy NY area. The obituary said he was the brother of the late Mrs. Edward Luddy. Other sisters listed were Mrs. J. Earl Stevens & Edwin F. Henry. So I tried to find a Michael Cahill in the census in Troy, with a sister Anna, and 2 other sisters that could have married the men listed in the obituary. >From the federal census, all in the City of Troy: 1900 census Name Age Timothy Cahill 45 Mary Cahill 42 Michael Cahill 19 Annie Cahill 17 Lorette Cahill 11 Elinor Cahill 6 Grace Cahill 3 1910 census Name Age Timothy Cahill 55 Mary Cahill 52 Michael Cahill 25 Anna Cahill 26 Loretta Cahill 20 Eleanor Cahill 16 Grace Cahill 13 1920 census Name Age Timothy Cahill 62 Mary Cahill 59 Elner Cahill 25 Grace Cahill 22 Michael Cahill 37 Note, couldn't easily find this family in 1930 census. Assuming that this is the Michael referred to in the obituary, he has a sister Annie/Anna, and there are 3 other sisters. To try to prove this is the same family as the one mentioned in the obituary I wanted to find that 2 of these sisters survived and married the two men listed in the obituary. So I looked up in the 1930 census the mens names, Earl Stevens and Edwin Henry. In the 1930 census, I find an Earl Stevens living in Troy, with his wife being "Lerettie" and an Edward (Edwin?) Henry living in Troy with his wife being "Grace". 1930 census Name Age Earl J Stevens 38 Lerettie Stevens 37 Mary Grace Stevens 6 Patrica Stevens 2 Married apx 1919 1930 census Name Age Edward F Henry 31 Grace A Henry 31 Mary E Henry 4 Edwin Henry 2 6/12 Married apx 1924 Also note this record from the 1920 census, names are a little diff but they are listed at the same address as Earl J and Lerettie in the 1920 census 1920 census Name Age E James Stevens 28 M Loretta Stevens 28 I also found a 1951 newspaper article about Edwin Henry which says that his wife is the former Grace Cahill. So reading back on this I realize that I didn't really answer any of your questions, which is usual for me, I seem to always find some information and then get off topic. We can figure that Anna would have died between 1932 (since she's listed with Edward in the 1930 census & the 1932 Watervliet directory) and 1944 (when she's listed as 'late'). Edward Luddy was still alive in 1932 and I would guess that he was probably still living as of 1944, or they probably wouldn't have listed his name in the obituary at all. I find that older obituaries do not usually list the 'late' survivors, although I have seen exceptions. I did find her mother Mary's obituary also, from February 1946, and at this point, father Timothy was already deceased. Mary was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, I am assuming in Waterford, NY. Chances are her husband Timothy is there too. Aside from visiting the cemetery, if I were you, my next step would be to go to the NYS Archives in Albany, if possible. In little time you could look up the exact death date for Anna and her death certificate number and also the one for her mother Mary. The others could be searched too but would probably take a little more time since the date of death is not certain. If you find this information and order from the Archives, you will receive the certificate(s) in about 2-3 weeks. Note that if you mail your request in the usual way, the normal processing time is said to be 6 months or more. The Troy City Clerk's office is also extremely helpful, if you can determine the place of death to be Troy (Mary's obituary says she did die in Troy). You could also check the City directories at the NYS Library, I'm not sure what years they have though. Sometimes they list the date of death in the directory, but at minimum, you should be able to get clues on a death year, based on when they disappear from the listings. I was able to find the exact date of death in 1884 for two of my 4th great-grandparents by searching these directories. Hopefully atleast some of this information is helpful to you!!!! Let me know if you would like any of the articles or listings that I found and I will email them to you. Good luck, Laurissa Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
