    3. Hal, I phoned the Albany County Hall of Records. They have a Register of Prisoners 1845-1927 for the Albany County Jail. They weren't sure of the exact name at that time, but they thought it was the one located where the present VA Hospital is located. They also have a Goal Commitment Book 1868-1878. Since I was told about it, I assumed it was for the same prison. You can download a research request form. Fee is $20. For other people reading this email: A section of the New York State Library called Manuscripts & Special Collections occupies a room in the NYS Archives in Albany. I think they have most of the **state** retired prison records. A page in a prison register that I saw there had information about the prisoner and his offense, plus mugshots and pasted-in news articles. 3. Barent Ten Eyck lived in Albany city in 1880, as can be seen in the census. He was recorded under a nickname. 1880 US census. NY, Albany Co., Albany city, Enumeration District 32. 144 Warren St., dwelling 170, family 242 TenEyck, Barney, W, 72, md, Shoemaker, unemployed 8/12, b NY, parents b NY Sally, W, 63, wf, md, Keeping house, b NY, parents b NY George, W, 17, grandson, single, Working in Store, unemployed 2?/12, b NY, parents b NY Unemployment was supposed to be within the census year, but the enumerator recorded it for the previous 12 months (census represented June 1). Knowing that Barent lived in Albany, he can be followed in the city directory, which may even tell his date of death on his last entry. If he died in the city of Albany, only the city will have the death certificates before 1914. Cliff
