I thought the list might be interested in a series of books published by www.arcadiapublishers.com on a variety of American towns and groups of settlers. I've just read two on Schenectady, where I have ancestors. These books don't normally give many people by name, but do give a wonderful flavor of what the town was like in early days. I've never been to Schenectady, or likely to be able to go, so these two were very helpful. One especially helpful thing was a map of the town at the time of the 1690 massacre, showing who owned property where, and listing a few of those killed. Since I have ancestors killed in the massacre, and some who survived it, this map is invaluable to me. That website gives a list of all the books they have published. It's a little awkward, as it has dots for each city/state where they have published a book. You have to guess fairly closely in order to find what you're looking for. But it's worth it. The books are short, about 128 pages for some reason, but are chock full of photos. I recommend them. I have only one ancestor baptized in Albany, but having read the Schenectady books, now I think I'll look at the Albany book too.
