I'm searching SMITH in Cohoes as well. I have multiple generations of SMITH with the given first and middle names of MATTHEW BERNARD. The first was born 1843. Do you have any other surnames associated with your SMITH? Some of my other surnames are MURTAUGH, VALLADARES, KLAR. It was so good to hear from you about the Smith family.  I don't have much and what I have found came from records on Ancestry.  The only Matthew Bernard Smith I have run across is on a WWII Draft Registration Card and he was born in Cohoes but resided in New Jersey. I really don't have very many surnames but think there were some ties to the COUTEE family.  I still don't know which SMITH Family my William b.1859 came from but it looks like he married a French Canadian woman and the same with their son Alfred J.  Alfred's wife Emma could possibly be a COUTEE.  Their son Bernard is the one who married Elaine MESSIER. I was looking at the NYALBANY archives and I saw that your Matthew Bernard's family left the Cohoes area.  Possibly you know more about the Cohoes SMITH'S so I hope to hear back from you.
