I came across the family of John McCabe and his wife Maria (also Mary E in some records). In 1870 John and Maria are listed in "West Troy" Albany Co. NY. He is a plasterer. The road name is not indicated but the McCabes are living next door John and Johana Curtin and family. The McCabes give their birth place as Ireland. The McCabes have 5 children - Elizabeth 19, William 17, Maria J 14, John A 10, and Robert 7. All of the children except Robert are listed as born in Ireland. Robert is recorded as born in NY. In 1880 'West Troy' is gone from the records and replaced with Watervliet - the larger community. The road indicated is Chapman St. which doesn't seem to exist anymore. John and 'Mary E' as she is now recorded are still living next door to the family of John and Johana Curtin. John McCabe is 51 and still a plasterer. His youngest son Robert (now 17) is also in the trade. There is a new name in the McCabe listing, a daughter Jennie age 20. I wonder if this is the 'Maria J' from 1870 - the ages are off a bit? I am nearly 100% certain that John McCabe along with his wife 'Maria' as she is recorded in 1860 - arrived on June 1 1860 with their children in NYC from Liverpool aboard the Harvey Birch. The passenger list has John McCabe 30, Maria McCabe 25, Eliza McCabe 7, Will 5, Maria 4, and John infant. The name match is too close to be coincidence. So my quest revolves around "Maria J" from 1870. I think that 'Maria J" may have gone by a second name beginning with 'J' to avoid confusion with her mother. I don't think she used 'Jennie' and I am wondering if anyone knows if she may have gone by 'Julia'? Julia McCabe of Albany marries a Timothy Delaney and they have a daughter Marie (maybe 'Marie J') - is this the passing along of a family name? Julia McCabe's age matches nicely with 'Maria J' McCabe of 1870 and Marie McCabe from the 1860 passenger list. I'd be very interested in any thoughts that or information that you might have.
