The Babcocks that I know lived in Richmondville, NY during the 1940s. Their grandson, John, lives in Paradise, California now and is about 79 years old. His phone number is 530-877-1909. I went to school with him at Richmondville Central. I really don't know anything more about them. I sent you the email because I know from experience that sometimes a tiny bit of information can lead to bigger networks. Sorry that I can't help more. Toribeth ************** Need a new ride? However, my grandmother (1887-1979), a life long resident of Mechanicville, and her contemporaries pronounced Mechanicville as thought it did have an "s" in it. Don't ask me why, because I do not have a clue. Mechanicville started out as the site of first a colonial tavern (1718) and then a mill in the original Saratoga Patent. The Anthony Kill, upon which the mill was seated, then became the southern boundary line of Great Lott # 1 of the Second Grand Division of the Saratoga Patten. In all likelihood the settlement took its name from an early woolen mill, owned by the Mechanicville Manufacturing Company, which had been erected on the Anthony Kill. The settlement grew from a colonial mill seat into a bustling mill village with a population of 800, when it was incorporated as a village in 1859. The earliest maps that I have found all spell Mechanicville without an "s". Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There were mills (West Va Co had a paper mill on the Hudson in which my Canadian grandfather (1888-1957) worked). When my grandmother (1887-1979) dropped out of high school because her father would not let her go to nursing school, she went to work in a shirt factory in Mechanicville. There were lots of employment opportunities in Mechanicville back in the day. A mill town on the Hudson River would have been a logical place for a new immigrant to settle. Hi Laurien, I have a question for you about your Babcock family. Did any of them live in Bethlehem or marry anyone named Nellis? The time period would have been 1780 to 1800. Richard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----

Laurien, I am afraid that I shall have to give you a very definite maybe as the answer to your question about whether there are any Babcocks on my family tree. It has been so long since I have looked at that material. I have been so busy with my 1777-Saratoga Tax District, Albany County, NY research that I would really have to dig deep into my filing cabinets to find my own genealogical data. My immigrant Potter ancestor was Robert Potter (c.1600-1655) of Warwick, RI. I also count among my ancestors eight (8) May Flower passengers, John McCoone (1630-1705) of Westerly, RI, Samuel Wilbore (1597-1656) of Boston MA, Roger Williams (1604-1683) of Providence, RI, John Crandall (1612-1696) of Westerly, RI and John Freeman (1600-1645) of Sudbury, MA, Francis Baker (1611-1696) of MA, among others. (What can I say, my ancestors on my father's side of my family tree failed in Europe early.) I seem to remember there being a Babcock somewhere in that mix, but off of the top of my head, I can not tell you, who it is or when they lived. I'll have to get back to you on this one. However, there were four (4) men with the surname of Babcock living in the Saratoga Tax District of Albany County, NY during the Rev War. They were Job, Jonathan, Nehemiah and Timothy. The only person for whom I have any genealogical data is Timothy Babcock. Do you know anything about any of these men? Thanks for your help and your patience. Mechanicville stated out as the site of a colonial mill in the original Saratoga Patent. The Anthony Kill, upon which the mill was located, then became the southern boundary line of Great Lott # 1 of the Second Grand Division of the Saratoga Patten. The modern term "suburb" is not applicable applicable to Mechanicville either as a colonial mill seat or as the bustling 19th century milling city into which it grew. West Va.Co. shut down the paper mill in the late 1960s. The railroad abandoned the switching yard some years later. Leslie Potter Johnntravis@aol.com wrote: > Mechanicville is NOT a suburb of Albany.
