Adoption records for the most part are sealed in NYS. There is an adoption registry. Both sides have to agree and be registered. JT **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Wills are NOT available through the County Clerk. They come out of Surrogates Court, a different entity with different rules and payment schedules. not my own experience but i have heard from those trying to find their birth parents that records pertaining to adoption are sometimes sealed. don't know if this is off topic but that is the only instance i have heard of public records being restricted jim Judy Lock wrote: > As posted by Joe Lake, why would the LDS "restrict" these records? > > "Albany Listers: On May 14th, 2008 I ordered the following (3) fiche record from the > LDS Salt Lake City Library: "An Index of Albany County (N.Y.) Joe: There probab;y is no comprhensive list of sources but can suggest reviewing Olivetreegenealogy.com. http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/index.shtml Be careful when accessing the records. Scroll down and check them out. Don't try just entering a name in the center of the site. That will take you to ancestry.com. Lots of FREE data including church and shps records etc. Also see the URL below for transcribed records etc. for the Albany area. New York not easy to search because there weren't many regulations on BMD's until 1880's. Of course lamnd and deed records as well as Wills are available through local County Clerks. Centralized records really not there for the most part. Also try NYGENWEB sites for particular Counties you are searching they vary in the amount of info provided but you should be able to get some help there.
I have run into "restricted films" but then there will be a second film number (of the same information) that is not restricted. ??? Janet Buchanan In a message dated 6/8/2008 10:19:00 A.M. No, a reason wasn't given, but I didn't question the legitimacy. That's a dead issue with me. : -) I'm now trying to find a new source/list/etc which will give me an overview of the available, before 1750, Albany Co records (such a listing makes it easier, naturally, to search the potentially most productive sources first). Contact Craig Carlson down at ACHOR. Also if you go to AlbanyCounty.com and go to County Clerk, there is a listing of records. You're probably looking for the Grantor-Grantee Index to Albany County Records, 1630-1892 (the Melius Index). JT **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. As posted by Joe Lake, why would the LDS "restrict" these records? "Albany Listers: On May 14th, 2008 I ordered the following (3) fiche record from the LDS Salt Lake City Library: "An Index of Albany County (N.Y.) Records Covering Materials Within The Dates 1630-1930". Several weeks later I was notified by the local (Sacramento CA) Family History Center that the above (3) Fiche were "Permanently Restricted" (& thus could not be sent from Salt Lake to a Family History Center)." Albany Listers: On May 14th, 2008 I ordered the following (3) fiche record from the LDS Salt Lake City Library: "An Index of Albany County (N.Y.) Records Covering Materials Within The Dates 1630-1930". Several weeks later I was notified by the local (Sacramento CA) Family History Center that the above (3) Fiche were "Permanently Restricted" (& thus could not be sent from Salt Lake to a Family History Center). On most Rootsweb lists there are a number of research oriented & talented people who are very familiar and experienced with the records available to the list members for researching in the county or geographical area covered by that list. I've just joined your list (explained below, if you care to read that also) and would appreciate one (or many) of those experienced individuals giving me the basic outline of available Albany County Records, and the best ways/places to get in to the early (1750 and before) history of Albany Co and the multitude of counties which split off from original Albany County. I've already used "N.Y. State Deeds 1654-1901 Grantees Index (G-K) & Grantors Index (H-L) 1630-1894" and struck out immediately. It's a beautifully printed record (as most of you know) but didn't have the info I was hoping to find. This is what I'm looking for (skip this part if you're busy, etc. but it's kinda' intriguing, to me): On 20 Dec. 1745 William Hopkins, Archbald Hopkins, Robert Lawtridge (Lottridge) and his wife Elizabeth (Hopkins) Lawtridge, all of Albany County NY, sold land in Sussex Co, Delaware which had been owned by John Hopkins, deceased, Father of the above 3 Hopkins. I have already found Robert Lottridge & wife Elizabeth on an on-line site created and maintained by Mr. Stefan Bielinski which confirms their presence in Albany County, but I need a lot more of course. It is my present *assumption* that John Hopkins (the deceased Father) was once a resident of Albany County, who moved to Delaware, leaving behind his above three children. But I still have to *prove* that assumption (sigh !!!). Before I can prove (or not) it, however, I need to get a better handle on the available records. Thanks very much. Joe Lake, Sacramento, CA
Seeking parents of JOHN JORDAN born 6 Mar 1764 WHERE I KNOW NOT. He died 26 Jan 1850 Pike, Wyoming Co, NY, but buried in family lot in Friendship, Allegany Co., NY. He married 15 Sep 1785 probably in or near Goshen, Orange NY Julia SWARTOUT born 18 Nov 1769 daughter of Jacobus SWARTOUT who before and during the Revolution lived in Sugar Loaf which is now in town of Chester, Orange Co., NY but then in town of Warwick, Orange Co., NY. Following children born to John and Julia: Michael 1786 in Orange Co; William 1788; Jesse 1790; James 1791; John 1792; Andrew; 1795; Betsey 1797; Isaiah 1799; Sally (Patty) 1801; JACOB 1803; Julia Margaret 1805; Unnamed son 1807 at which time Julia probably died because she does not appear in 1810 census. John/Julia do not appear in the 1790 census of NYS in their own home with two sons nor have I found them in PA, NJ or any N.E. state. By 1800, JORDAN family residing in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY. >From there, Michael, William and Jesse settled in and died in Steuben Co. James and John settled town of Cuba, Allegany Co., NY; Isaiah, after living with his brother, Michael in Steuben Co., migrated on to Allegany Co and he and brothers Andrew and JACOB settled in town of Wirt of Allegany Co., NY. Betsey (Elizabeth) Jordan married Sebastion WELLER and lived in Canajoharie, Montgomery Co., NY. Sally married John DYGERT and lived in Montgomery Co, NY. Julia Margaret married Charles PHELPS, migrated to Pike, Wyoming Co. and it was at her home that JOHN died in 1850. In 1840, JOHN JORDAN is still residing at Cherry Valley but by 1848 has migrated to town of Wirt and because he died before 1850 census was taken, it has been family tradition that he lived with his son, JACOB, but his will probate states he died at home of his daughter in Wyoming Co. ANY help would be appreciated on these above mentioned families.... Ruth Jordan Thoden rjthoden@juno.com

Is there anyone who lives close and would be going to the State library that could do a lookup from 1865 and 1885 state census. Is there an index for entire state census or only by counties? Does the state library do lookups? Genealogy is my Hobby, I collect ancestors !

The person you want t talk to is Stanley Axelrod. He is referenced in the article I sent. He has a website devoted to Albany schools and surely knows more than most n this subject.
