    1. [NYALBANY] ADMIN MSG-vista info
    2. Pat Connors
    3. It is up to the list admin to decide what is appropriate for this list and what is not. I find the computer info important as it had to do with genealogy programs compatibility and such. Plus, we are using a computer to converse on this list. If you don't like the thread, then by all means delete the message without reading. They are all descriptive in the subject. If you have a problem with the list, write me OFF list, don't complain on the list. Thank you for your cooperations. > I love the information on this list but enough with Vista info!! > -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, list admin http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    3. Luckily, my Gateway came with a trial of the new Microsoft programs. Also, I have an EPSON printer/scanner and needed to go to their website and download the correct VISTA compatible drivers for the printer/scanner, but they were easy to find and once downloaded, it all worked fine. I was nervous too about giving up Windows XP but it was hard to find a computer with it anymore, so I took the plunge to VISTA. So far, so good...unless you send a Word or Excel to someone with an older version, and they can't convert. I can convert from an older one to up to mine. 3. Hi Cliff, I recently got a new HP computer that has the Vista operating system. My old computer used the Windows 2000 operating system. I was able to get my HP 940c printer to work with a converter plugged into a USB slot. My scanner also worked. I had no problems with my TMG program. I did have to purchase Microsoft Office 2007 program software. Richard

    1. [NYALBANY] Windows XP versus Vista - Vista DOES work with PAF 5
    2. Lin Van Buren
    3. Hi, Cliff Thank you for your posting about Windows Vista versus Windows XP. Here is a teaspoonful of feedback, which I hope will be helpful to people. I have a NEW computer, with Windows Vista (that's what it came with). If we were to have a referendum on Windows Vista versus Windows XP and older, I would definitely vote for XP, which I find superior to Vista in many respects. HOWEVER, I also have PAF 5 for my genealogy software, as many of you have, and I have had PAF 5 for many years. Vista DOES work with PAF 5 just fine. I have heard on Click, which is the BBC's computers programme, that Vista is likely to be superseded sooner than its predecessors were. I don't know if this is true. I have already had to download a patch to fix a flaw, and I've had this Windows Vista for less than two months. Something to think about is NOT ONLY how long Windows XP will continue to be sold BUT ALSO how long Microsoft will continue to support it. 1. [NYALBANY] Windows XP vs. Vista
    2. Janice Wiegley
    3. I have a new Dell with Vista. My Legacy program works fine with it. My scanner (Epson 1200) works with it as well. My camera, label printer and various toys work fine with it. Things are in different places and everything looks different so I think it scares people. I've had no trouble with it at all and found setup of hardware and stuff actually easier than XP. When you get past the different look some may find Vista easier to use. Anyone with any specific questions please feel free to send me an email at wigs@roadrunner.com. Mac's will run XP now as well. 3. Hi Cliff; I think Service Pack 3 is now available for Windows XP. There is a link available from Microsoft whereby you can request them to send you a CD free of charge for Service Pack 3. I am waiting for my techie to send the link to me. Let me know if you would like that link and I could post it to the group. 1. [NYALBANY] Windows XP versus Vista
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. I would like to point out something that could be important to some list members who, like me, are on the verge of buying a new computer. I have bought only Dell computers in the past ten years, so I have only researched that brand recently. Next Wednesday, June 18, is the last day you can get a computer from Dell that is loaded with Windows XP. After that, you will receive Windows Vista from Dell. I don't know if you can still get XP from other computer manufacturers or how long they will have it if they still sell it. I have been told by various people that Vista will not likely work with my older genealogy program where I keep all of my data. It will not work with LOTS of programs, I am told. It may not work with genealogy CD's, but I have not read anything about that. Microsoft came out with a Vista Service Pack 1 to help ease the pain, but a friend told me that Vista is very unlikely to work with my printer or scanner, and perhaps not with my camera dock that plugs into my computer. I read online that I might have to contact the manufacturers of my hardware to see if I can get drivers from them for Vista. Most companies make new drivers for relatively new hardware, but not for older versions they no longer sell. Manufacturers usually do not make old software compatible with new operating systems, so if you are working with an old, but favorite, program, you should be concerned enough to at least make some inquiries. Perhaps some knowledgeable person on this list can comment on this topic. I don't want to scare anyone, and I certainly am no authority on this subject, but I will be buying a new computer with XP by June 18. I am not trying to promote Dell, but I would like to make some comments. In this month's Consumer Reports, Apple was rated best for best for both laptops and desktops. Dell was second for desktop computers and third (after Lenovo) for laptops. Their support is supplied by Phillipine technicians who spoke much more clearly than those who support my antivirus. Dell has a system called something like Go To Assist. It saves both you and the company a lot of time. With your permission, they take control of your computer and do everything for you. Recently, I couldn't install an antivirus because my computer couldn't download the required XP Service Pack 2. The Dell employee not only installed that program, he also installed the antivirus for me. All I had to do was put the CD in the drive. I was impressed almost beyond words. His accent was not a problem, but I also didn't have to worry about it anyways because he wasn't telling me each step that I should make. Dell has one other thing that I think is wonderful (other computer manufacturers may have something similar). It is called DataSafe. A program comes with a Dell computer that will allow you to automatically back up your important files daily, weekly, etc. The backups are securely stored on the Dell site where a house fire or theft will not cause you to lose your backup. DataSafe comes with some low end Dell computers free for the first year, but the service can be purchased for any XP or Vista computer purchased from Dell (a Dell salesperson did not know that). The cost is an incredibly low $9 per year for 3 gigabytes of storage (which is all I would need), or a higher fee for more storage space. I am writing a book and I add research to my genealogy program daily. I back it up on a separate external hard drive, but I don't think of it often enough. I like the Dell feature because it is automatic as long as your computer is online. I will benefit in no way if you buy a Dell computer. I just wanted to let you know about the Vista problem, a deadline for getting XP from Dell, and some of the Dell features that I find so important. Cliff Lamere

    3. Joe, Consult my website, "Albany & Eastern New York Genealogy." It has many aids that will help you. I wrote a webpage called "Finding Records in New York State." That will help you understand what is available for the Albany area and in the state. Also, my webpage "Guide to Albany Area Genealogical Resources" tells a great deal about finding records in the state. It lists where to write or phone over 40 places in surrounding counties. You can find all of these things using Google. The following URL will take you to a webpage where you can figure out which counties split off from Albany county and when. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygenweb/county.htm Cliff Lamere ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ joslake@sbcglobal.net wrote: >Albany Listers: On May 14th, 2008 I ordered the following (3) fiche record from the >LDS Salt Lake City Library: "An Index of Albany County (N.Y.)
