    3. Harold, You asked me about the parents of Robert STEWART. Based mostly upon census data, I suspect that his parents are James STEWART and Ann SEATON, but nether left wills nor have I been able to find the birth or baptism records for their children that would seal the deal. I have pieced together the following. James STEWART was born 28 Feb 1749 (based upon age at death), place unknown . He enlisted 1775 from Blandford, MA immediately after the Battle of Lexington. He married first 6 May 6 1776 (date of intention) Ann SITTON or SEATON. She was born about 1750 based upon age at death. She died 1 Mar 1814 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. He married second 9 Apr 1815, Cynthia WARD at Westerlo only a month later when he was 65 and she was 28. Hmmmm. The questionably reliable Stewart Clan Magazine says that they had two sons, James and William. When he applied for a pension in 1832, he was living in Westerlo and testified that he enlisted in Blandford, MA. The pension record contains no birth info, but some local histories say he was born in Scotland. I suspect that James was Scotch-Irish. Suspected children of James STEWART and first wife Ann SEATON: * James STEWART Jr., born about 1786 in Delaware County. Died between 1860 and 1865, probably in Westerlo. This is the ancestor of Laura Rabideau, with whom I have been collaborating on research. * Robert STEWART, born 1794 in NY or CT. Died 1868 in Westerlo. Left will. I have not found a grave. Robert was living in Berne in 1830 and 1840. Jesse STEWART might be a brother of James STEWART Sr. He was also a solider who moved from Blandford, MA to Delaware County. Jesse is in Kortright, Delaware, NY in 1810. James was there sometime before 1800. A Silas and Benjamin STEWART of Kortright may also have been brothers. Note: while James STEWART Sr (1749-1844) lived in Kortright, Delaware, NY, there was another James STEWART (1747/48-1823) living in the adjacent town of Stamford, Delaware, NY. He also had a son named James STEWART. The other James was a son of William STEWART. Early census data more often used STUART than STEWART, also STEWARD. Which Van Denburgh male married Nancy "ELVIRA" Worden before 1863 and possibly died before 1870 Census? Are there marriage records? Are there death records for this male VanDenburgh in Cohoes? One census lists him born in Nova Scotia another NY. The family is very well settled in Cohoes, Albany County, NY from 1850 of the Worden's to 1920's the Van Denburgh descendants of this Nancy ELVIRA (WORDEN) VANDENBURH and unknown male VANDENBURGH. Lorenzo VanDenburgh married Delia (Rivet/Rival?) per census of 1900. He had one son I will list here: Leslie William VanDenburgh who m. Louise Perrault. Rena VanDenburgh married Abraham Lincoln BRAMHALL in Cohoes, NY, they died in Oneida County, NY and are buried in Carr Cemetery, Marcy, NY. I have their obits. He died 1931 and she died Oct. 3rd, 1945. Nancy "Elvira" (Worden) VanDenburgh is also buried in Carr Cem., Marcy, NY. She died in March 1932, but her obit does not list her husband, who I assume died before the 1870 Census in Cohoes, NY. Nancy ELVIRA Worden is the daughter of Lorenzo Worden and is listed in the Census inf. I have searched Census data and Ancestry.com and Albany County, nygenweb to no avail. Any clues or information welcomed. Sincerely, Marilyn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Leslie, Your geography question is not off-topic. On county websites, history and geography are as important as genealogy. It just happens that most people are here for the genealogy, but it is best understood in a geographical and historical context. French's "Gazetteer of New York State" (1860) has no such location. Using Google, I entered "Arlington, NY" (with the quotation marks) and clicked on a hit called ePodunk. Here is what it says. "Arlington is in Dutchess County, in the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh metro area. The community was named for the Duke of Arlington [NOTE: This is not the only community in New York named Arlington. For links to other places called Arlington, NY, see the Duplicate Names box <#fkaLink> at right.] That box says, "NY communities formerly known as Arlington: ·Richford </cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=1525>, Tioga County" Tioga Co. formed from Montgomery Co. in 1791. Montgomery was formed from Tryon Co. in 1784 (Tryon was just renamed) which formed from Albany Co. in 1772. This makes the Arlington in Tioga Co. a possibility, but when I went to the Tioga Co. website and entered Arlington, none of the five hits was for a location in NY. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nygenweb/county.htm Dutchess Co. was an original county, so that particular Arlington does not fit your requirement that Arlington be in old Albany Co. I also found this on another site, written by the Town of Richford historian: "Richford is located in the northeast corner of Tioga County... The population in the 1990 census was 1153. The name is from an early settler, Ezekiel Rich, who donated half of the public square. The town was formed from Berkshire, first as the town of Arlington in 1831. Its name was changed by an act of legislature in 1832, the same year the town was officially organized." http://www.tiogacountyny.com/towns_villages/richford_history.php Tioga Co. would not seem to be the location either. It formed too late. A phone call or letter to the historian might give you more insight as to whether Arlington was also a very small community there at one time. Cliff ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Leslie B. 3. Jane, Thank you for responding to my query. I don't know if Brisco meant Arlington, VT or not. I have a copy of "New York: Atlas of Historical County Boundaries" by Kathryn Ford Thorne. According to Thorne, on March 16, 1770, Albany County lost jurisdiction over most of the land in Vermont. On March 12, 1772, Albany County lost jurisdiction over the rest of Vermont ,with the exception of only the southern half of Bennington County, VT. Is Arlington in the southern half of Bennington County, VT? I do not own a modern map of Vermont. On January 14, 1777, Albany County lost jurisdiction over the southern half of present day Bennington County, VT. Brisco said that he left home in 1777. If he left home after, January 14, 1777, Arlington, VT could not have been in Albany County, NY. Since Burgoyne did not arrive in Montreal to lead his military expedition down the Champlain/Hudson Valley to Albany until May 6, 1777, I assume that Brisco did not leave home until later that spring or until early summer of 1777. Unfortunately, Thorne only shows county lines and not the villages or land patents within the counties. 3. Hi Cliff, Thank you for the information. Historical geography can be a real nightmare at times. This is one of those times. Since Tryon County had been created from Albany on March 12, 1772, I suspect that if Brisco had been from Tryon County, he would have said so. There are plenty of men from Tryon County, who were Loyalists, fled to Canada, filed claims and are listed in Coldham's book. However, I found Arlington, VT on the 1775 Montressor map of the Province of New York. It looks like Arlington is due east of the town of Salem, Washington County, NY. So I googled Arlington, VT. The google map showed that Arlington, VT is located south side of Route 313, which appears to follow the Batten Kill for at least part of its course. Thorne's Atlas seems to indicate that the Batten Kill was the dividing line between the north and south sections of present day Bennington County, VT from March 12, 1772 to January 14, 1777. So since Albany County's loss of the southern half of Bennington County was a recent event in relation to Isaac Brisco's departure for Canada, maybe the news of the change had not caught up to Mr. Brisco. Although Isaac Brisco may not have been completely accurate about which county he lived in on January 15, 1777, it is "close enough for government work". I suspect that the British government did not fuss about his inaccuracy. Now to figure out my next puzzle. I have a Timothy Buill, who claimed to live in Charlotte County, but describes Ft. Miller as being on the wrong side of the Hudson River. Why historians get gray! Thanks again, Leslie Cliff Lamere wrote: > Leslie, > > Your geography question is not off-topic. Author: aggieway Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.albany/7603.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My 1944 City Directory shows George A Stahler as a funeral director at 200 Lark St. In 1953, the business was at 12 Colvin Ave, Albany (note: not a funeral home today). The 1959 City Directory shows that George died in 1957, but a widow Anne and his son George Jr. (a student) are shown living together. Try plugging George A. Stahler into zabasearch.com for NY State. The one born in 1939 appears to live not far from Albany and is about the right age to have been listed in the City Directory as a student in 1959. He could be the undertaker's son and perhaps could help you with the location of any records that might survive if you are willing to contact him. Also, have you contacted the Ann Lee Home (now merged with the Albany County Nursing Home) to see if they might be of any help? I've no idea what records they might have kept or if they would even release them. It occurs to me that if you have no informant on the death certificate that perhaps the Ann Lee Home rather than a relative/friend made the burial arrangements. Hope this helps a little. 1. Re: [NYALBANY] Amos NETTLETON and Daniel NETTLETON
    2. Leslie B. Potter
    3. Dear List, I always like knowing the end of the story. So let me tell you what I found out about Amos Nettleton and his brother, Daniel Nettleton, with the help of two members of the Albany County e-mail list. (The two Albany County List members were Donna [no last name given] and Janet Haseley, Research Chair, Rensselaerville Historical Society). I had run the whole list of surnames enumerated in the September 18th, 1779 Minutes of the Commissioners for Conspiracies past the several of the county lists and received two responses pertaining to the other men, who had been the subject of the Minute from the Commissioners on Conspiracies along with Daniel Nettleton. These responses helped me hone in on Amos and Daniel Nettleton. Amos Nettleton lived in Dutchess County and served in the Second Regiment of the Dutchess County Militia during the Rev War. At some point Amos Nettleton removed from Dutchess County and settled in the Rensselaerwick District of Albany County prior to the 1790 U.S. Census being taken. Daniel Nettleton apparently had settled in the Half Moon District of Albany County. He had been there long enough and was prosperous enough to have been listed on both the March 2, 1779 and the October 23, 1779 Half Moon District Tax Lists for Albany County, NY. According to Tim Fenton, Daniel had applied for land in Canada by 1791. Coldham's "American Loyalist Claims" gave me the information on Joseph Knapp, one of other men from the Half Moon District, who had been hauled before the Commissioners for Conspiracies with Daniel Nettleton in 1779. Knapp had been driven from his farm in the Half Moon District of Albany County in 1781 for harboring 19 members of the British army. Coldham states that Knapp escaped to Canada with seven others. I suspect that there is the real possibility that Daniel Nettleton, of the Half Moon District of Albany County may well have been one of those seven. Admittedly there was nothing straight forward about this research, but all is well that ends well, no matter how circuitous the route. Sincerely, Leslie Potter Glen Mills, PA
