Vital Records Indexes The State Department of Health makes available for public use microfiche copies of older indexes to birth, marriage, and death certificates. * The indexes cover the entire state outside of New York City and start in June 1880 (deaths) or 1881 (marriages and births). * Birth indexes are made available after 75 years, marriage and death indexes after 50 years. * An index entry states only the name of the person, date and place of event, and State certificate number. Indexes for certain years are arranged by SOUNDEX codes. Scope of Indexes: * The DOH indexes do not include vital events in New York City and in the former city of Brooklyn for any period. * The indexes do include vital events in the former towns of Kings County prior to their annexation by the City of Brooklyn in the 1880s and '90s; in portions of Westchester County prior to their annexation by New York City in 1895; and in Richmond County (Staten Island) and the western portion of Queens County prior to their incorporation into the City of New York, January 1, 1898. * The indexes do not include births and deaths in Albany, Buffalo, and Yonkers prior to 1914, or marriages in those cities prior to 1908. (Contact the local registrar of vital statistics in those cities for information about earlier records.) * The birth indexes do not include original data for adopted infants. The birth and death indexes do include data on individuals who were born or died in a state facility (such as a prison or mental hospital). **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Hi Marilyn, Do you have anything on the John T. Bramhall who was born about 1850 in NY and had a daughter Lida who was born about 1880. Lida married Charles A. Tracy about 1900. Richard
When my DRISCOLL and DEVLIN lines lived in Cohoes, they lived on Garner St. a couple of houses from each other (that's how John Driscoll and Mary Devlin met). One of the houses was 33 Garner St., they both were Catholic and I have not yet determined the church they attended as I think there were several Catholic churches in the area? Mary Devlin Driscoll's death certificate indicates Calvary Cemetery Cohoes. I was hoping to get more info from the cemetery records, and who else was buried in the plot. Hi, All, I've been looking for my Reed family graves in St. Agnes Cemetery in Cohoes for years. There are a lot them there, but many of the early graves apparently were unmarked, and the Cemetery records were poorly kept. The only way I knew that the family members (1887, 1887, and 1910) were buried in St. A's was from the death certificates. The one exception were my ggrandparents, Michael and Katharine Hughes Quinn. I spotted their monument because it stands near one of the roads in the cemetery. There are three children listed on it as well, that have the ages at death, but no year of death. Even with the monument, the cemetery couldn't help me with the death dates. St. Agnes Church early death and burial records seem to have disappeared, but the marriage and baptism records are pretty good. Since the family went to St. Agnes Church, the combination of sloppy record keeping at the cemetery, and the missing records at the church have really frustrated me to say the least. The Albany Diocese took over the St. A's cemetery, along with a few others and, hopefully, will be able to sort out where my people are buried. Ann

I have discovered an artifact in the way Mc names are entered at ancestry.com. Some names such as my own are entered as expected MCHENRY with no space after the C. Others are entered with a space after the C that is MC HENRY. You must search both to be sure you captured all. MIKE maurmike1@verizon.net
Hello Albany County listers, I am relatively new to this board, but I have belonged and continue to belong to many boards from NY to CA and 2 in NY this one and Cayuga County for the past 8 years. There is a wonderful site on the Fulton County site called Fulton Postcards or www.fultonhistory.com where NY newspapers are posted in original pages in PDF format. I did a simple search of names, Elizabeth Haverly, Albert Sinclair and Bernard Sinclair and got many hits, i.e. newspaper mentions in Albany NY Evening Journal and others, from 1892-1940's. This is where I got ALL the VanDenburgh/Bramhall obits from 1931-1990's with dates of death and family members and their CONFIRMED place of birth as Cohoes, WITH JUST NAMES AND LOCATION OF COHOES, ALBANY COUNTY, NY. One of these articles may hold clues for the person seeking Bernard Sinclair, Albert Sinclair and Elizabeth Haverly of Albany County, NY. I am just posting this information to inform others of this great FREE site and to encourage others that even just a name, without details, can lead to sources and information that is useful. I would never discourage others to post, who only have just a name.....it MIGHT be one I know or have inf. on! Best wishes to all & happy hunting of your NY ancestors, If any of your NY ancestors went to MI, I know of many free sites in Michigan and I might be able to help. No way did I doubt you, John ! :^) Actually I was excited when I read your E-mail because I have a DRISCOLL that was buried in Calvary Cohoes that I have not been able to track down. I was hoping I'd be posting a find and thanking you for that. But unfortunately, as I learned when I called St. Agnes, their Calvary records go back to 1892--and my Mary Devlin Driscoll died in 1882. If I find more on Calvary Cohoes, I will post to the list.
