    1. [NYALBANY] Indian Slaves in New York
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. The New York State Library has purchased some old documents. One from 1720 (Orange County) is the first documentation that New Yorkers at one time held Indian slaves. It was long suspected, but historians never had proof until now. The article was in today's Times Union newspaper (Albany). It will be viewable without a fee for six more days. http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=720450 Cliff Lamere

Author: pata41 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.albany/7628.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There is a WWI draft reg card for Edward Monroe Monty. He gives his birthdate as Oct. 31, 1891 & his birthplace as Plattsburgh, NY. The card was filed in June 1917 in Schoharie Co., NY. Plattsburgh is in Clinton Co. The 1900 census shows a Edward Monte in Plattsburgh, b. Oct. 1892 (errors are common on the census), a son of Henry & Jane Monte. I`ll past the index info. below. In 1910 Edward M. Monte, age 20, is in Plattsburgh living with his sister & bro-in-law Charles & Frances Parton. Edward had a sister, Frances, in 1900. In 1920 Edward M. Monty is in Duanesburg, Schenectady Co. with wife Mary, dau. Elizabeth, 8 & mother-in-law Elizabeth Hyser, 66. If you do a search for "Henry Monty" in the Clinton Co., newspapers at http://news.nnyln.net/ you`ll get 16 hits. One is a death notice from 1931 which says Henry Monty died at the home of his son Edward in Schenectady. Another is a death notice from 1901 for Mrs. Jane White of Plattsburgh, the wife of Henry Monty, who was a daughter of Silas P. White. If you know when/where Edward died, his death certificate may confirm his parents names. You also might try to get a birth certificate for Edward from the Plattsburgh city clerk here: 41 City Hall Place Plattsburgh, NY 12901 518-563-7702 Pat R. 1900 United States Federal Census (index info) Name: Henry Monte Home in 1900: Plattsburg, Clinton, New York Age: 48 Birth Date: Jul 1851 Birthplace: New York Race: White Ethnicity: American Relationship to head-of-house: Head Father's Birthplace: New York Mother's Birthplace: Canada Fr Spouse's Name: Jane Marriage Year: 1869 Marital Status: Married Years Married: 31 Residence : Plattsburg, Clinton, New York Household Members: Name Age Henry Monte 48 Jane Monte 49 Nellie Monte 21 Clinton Monte 17 Frances Monte 10 Edward Monte 7 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. From what I understand, the building is still there. A few questions for locals: is the building still there? Does it look the same or has it been dramatically renovated? If it would be possible to photograph the store and surrounding property with a digital camera, and email the photos, I would be eternally grateful!
