Don't ask, Harold. Actually, one of row of bldgs once owned by Albany County in a Tax Foreclosure. I have an article somewhere about them - last remaining downtown row type buildings. I find this discussion of Green Street very interesting. My great-great-grandfather, Christopher Hess, lived at 59 Green St.?at the time of his death on?21 Aug., 1875. He was prosperous, and had owned and operated an oyster house at 52 Green St.?since 1852. I visited the street about 10 years ago and all the houses were gone except one nearby. I am interested in two organizations my GGGrandfather belonged to. His obituary said he "had been associated with the Twenty-Fifth regiment for many years, and had been a Lieutenant in the old City Volunteers." Does anybody know what either of these organizations were, or if anything has been written about them? Thanks very much, Anne Hess Neville

City Directories and Assessment Rolls for the City of Albany are at ACHOR (Albany County/City Hall of Records). Go to Albany County website. Delaware Ave was relatively sparely populated in these yrs. Green St was much livelier. 68 Green would have been around the downtown area. Frankly, then it was a red-light district. I think I remember 68 Green. Torn down about 10-15 yrs. ago, it was a brothel. J Travis **************Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. Try it now. A group of researchers interested in their ancestors from the Hilltowns of western Albany County have just started a new group<http://www.facebook.com/groups.php?ref=sb#/group.php?gid=3985977684>on facebook.com. Its purpose is to explore the history of the Hilltowns of western Albany County and the families that lived there (the Towns of Berne, Knox, Westerlo, and Rensselaerville). http://www.facebook.com/groups.php?ref=sb#/group.php?gid=39859776842 We already have proposals for some very exciting projects: - We propose to write a series of books on the history of the Hilltowns and the families that settled there. The first in the series will be a book on the history of Berne and Knox. There will be a chapter on each of the German and Dutcth familes that lived in the area before 1787. The second book, perhaps written concurrently, will be on the history of Berne and Knox and each of the families that lived there from 1788 until the formation of Knox in 1822. The series will then include separate books on Knox and Berne up to 1866. Books are also envisioned on the history of Westerlo and Rensselaerville for the same time periods. The chapters on each family would be written by family researchers. We will need volunteer to edit each book, and family researchers to volunteer to write on their own families. - The second big project is to write the history of each Hilltown farm. It is proposed that it be online in wiki format. That means that anyone can update the history of each farm based on their knowledge and research. The farms will be indexed to the grid created by the Van Rensselaer Patroon who once owned all of the land in the Hilltowns. - A third project would be the history of each house on Beers 1866 map of the various Hilltowns. It too would be online in wiki format so that anyone can add to and edit what is written. These ambitious projects will require the collaborative effort of hundreds of people. Please join our Hilltown group and tell us how you would like to help. Harold Miller Berne Historical Project www.Bernehistory.org <http://www.Bernehistory.org>

The 1900 census gives birth date for Elizabeth as Nov. 1860. The husband possibly Manuel. The 1910 census has a Manuel Putnam age 82 living with the Reynolds family as father in law.

I have seen posting for this family name from Paul Tierney, if he is still a member of this list could he please contact me. Hello Paul, I have seen postings for your family in Rootsweb. After 1870 there was a second Tierney family from Ireland in the city of Albany with similar given names. John b about 1845 Ireland, wife Mary b about 1845 Ireland and children Sarah, Jeremiah, Anna, Mary, Cornelius, Elizabeth. I was hoping that in your research you may have accumulated information on this second family. I am trying to connect it to my research through the mother Mary - she would be Mary Young if she is in fact the woman I am looking for. Look forward to hearing from you. Gay Young

After the census was taken, John sold all of his property and went to Germany. He returned to the Albany, NY area in June 1911. On his death certificate it says that he moved to 68 Green St. four months before he died there. His family in Germany were told that he died in a hotel and that he had a lot of money with him but that it disappeared. They think that he may have been killed. His death certificate says that he died from illnesses. Do you know what the area was like in 1917? How would I find the City Directories and Assessment rolls for that year? ACHOR has City Directories and Assessment rolls for that year. Not the best neighborhood - was red light district around then. I have a wonderful book about Schenectady, that has every single house and building for a certain period. But alas not Albany.
Is there a way to find out if 68 Green St. was a house or a hotel in 1911? We always thought that our great grandfather died in a house but now we have been told that he died in a hotel. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Joan ************** Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. Try it now. If you give his name, maybe someone can locate him on the census for 1910. The NYS Library has many Coeymans area Church records. Look at the Excelsior catalog under NYS Library. I don't think the records themselves are on-line.
