You are absolutely correct, the original "Town of Watervliet" consisted of everything not the City of Albany. The Village of Green Island was unwanted when the Town of Colonie was formed and since Villages can't exist outsides of Towns, Green Island became both. There are three of these Town-Villages around the State. JTravis **************You can't always choose whom you love, but you can choose how to find them. Start with AOL Personals. The original query that was gatewayed from the Albany County Message Board specifically referenced the year 1854. The answer that I provided, through that same message board, was correct for that timeframe. That was then, this is now, and municipalities have changed as much as other conditions. Green Island, Albany County is not within the Town of Watervliet. It is a Village co-terminus with the Town of Green Island. They have a Village Mayor and a Town Supervisor. Try the Hudson River Maritine Museum in Kingston, NY. They may have records and someone who can help.
Is there anyone on the list who is researching family members who worked on the steamboats that traveled between Albany and NYC in the 1860's and 1870's? If so,please contact me at.. dannnan1@bellsouth.net Thanks. Danny Guinan in Charleston,SC

I'm another Cohoesier. I lived in the north part of Cohoes so wouldn't remember Matson's. My uncle John Rioux owned an ice house where they made the ice inside in many compartments. As a kid, we would go up there to see the ice. This was in the Orchard section up near the Cohoes Falls. Before this, he had an ice house up along the Mohawk River. If you were coming East on the river and came under the bridge that Route 9 uses, as soon as you came under that bridge, his ice house was on the right. Cliff, That's interesting, because in my mind I can see the shape of the pond in Kenwood, and what you say makes sense. My mother, who was born in 1887, once in her reckless youth drove a horse and buggy across the ice to Castleton and back. Our place wasn't right next to the river, but on River Road across from Peltz Rd. The ice house was just a small building, evidently just for private use, and it like our old barn and the other outbuildings were all lost to the Thruway around 1950 when the road cut the farm into two pieces. My great-grandfather, Jacob J. Soop, built the house around 1848 and it's still there, or was a couple of years ago, but much changed and with the road very close to the back of the house. Where did you live in Selkirk?
