    1. Re: [NYALBANY] Birth-Marriage, etc. records - 1800-1850
    2. Unfortunately NY didn't require any formal filing of Vital Records until the 1880's. Best sources are Church records, many of which have been transcribed, local Newspapers, cemetery and family records. For the Albany area start at Cliff Lamere's website.http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/

    1. [NYALBANY] Birth-Marriage, etc. records - 1800-1850
    2. Fire Fly
    3. I am new to this list and new to researching ancestry in NY state. Could someone please tell me if birth and/or marriage records exist for the first half of the 1800s -- and if so where they are located and how they can be accessed? Or perhaps if there might be other records that one can search to find ancestors or their parentage? Any advice anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated. My great-grandfather Simeon Coons was said to have been born in Albany, NY in 1818 and married to an Ann Alida Van Austrand. Their older children were also born in NY (Isaac -abt. 1836, Michael H. - abt. 1841, Alonzo - abt 1843, George W. - abt 1845, and Barnett D. - abt 1847). Other researchers claim that Simeon was a son of a Jacob Coons (Kuntz), a descendant of the Palatines that populated the upper Hudson region. A book I found at the LDS library in Salt Lake City on the Coons/Kuntz, etc. stops too early for Simeon. So far, I have not connected with anyone who has any proof of that claim and would like to link Simeon with his parents, etc. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Beth

    2. Marion Williams, the volunteer who does most of our genealogy research for the Rensselaerville Historical Society, tells me she did not find the Preston person being sought in the records of Brookside Cemetery (the cemetery in Preston Hollow). Maybe in mid-May when we can get back into the Grist Mill where our records are kept we can find something, but there is far too much snow blocking the door now and no heat inside so we close in winter. 3. Hello everyone, I am new to this group, I mostly use the NY Madison Co. group but I was hoping you could point to any cemetery listings for the Preston Hollow area of Resselaerville. I am looking for a Samuel Preston Sr. His grandson James was born in Preston Hollow in 1805 and I suspect Samuel passed away in that area. Thank you, Jason There can be no justice when all laws are absolute.

    3. 272 Orange Street is located in City of Albany, Albany County, New York. Quick check of the 1880 census at www.familysearch.org shows two men named John Tierney, both born Ireland, both age 37, both estimated birth year 1843, living in Albany County at the census. One in Albany City can be found on LDS microfilm 1254806 National Archives film T9-0806; one in West Troy Village can be found on LDS microfilm 1254808, National Archives film T9-0808. Good luck. I made 2 trips to the SUNY Albany library without success. The first time I got there just a few minutes before that room was closing so couldn't get to the microfilm. Second trip, I found it, but it has nothing to help you. On their catalog, it said NY Genealogical and Biographical Record, but the film was all assorted publications of the Civil War era. Even enlisting the help of library staff and looking in a booklet that was an index for those rolls showed nothing for that publication. I haven't given up and have some more avenues to explore. Hopefully, in the next week or two, I'll come up with your article. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The far NW section of Westerlo is included and shows the farm of Rufus K. and Emaline Rogers Gossman, my gg-grandparents. You can see it just to the left of the letter "W" for Westerlo. My question is this: Is William Gossman ("Wm. Gossman") essentially underneath that "W"? (*Major* differences of scale between Gould in 1854 and Beers in 1868!) Thanks.
