NYC changes birth certificate policy for lesbians _Comments 0_ (http://www.cbs6albany.com/news/city_1262016___article.html/parents_state.html#slComments) | _Recommend _ (javascript:recommendReview('Articlewrgb1262016')) 0 March 25, 2009 - 1:14 PM Associated Press NEW YORK Married lesbian couples in New York City can now be listed as parents on birth certificates as soon as their children are born. Before, the women would have to go through an adoption process to be listed as the official parents. The city Board of Health voted Tuesday to make the change. The state made a similar move in December, after a court ruling and a directive from Gov. David Paterson ordered state agencies torespect out-of-state gay marriages. The city says married male couples still will need to adopt their children in order to be officially declared their parents. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. Hello, If anyone is interested, I spent some time this afternoon taking photos at Grove Cemetery in Coeymans. No real system to my photos, I just kind of wandered around taking photos of some of the older stones and other stones that I thought were interesting. A few were to fulfill requests on findagrave.com, the rest were just because I like taking cemetery photos. These photos and some other cemetery photos I have taken can be viewed at http://jeremyjtaylor.shutterfly.com/cemeteryphotos. I will be adding to the site as time and weather permits, and hope to visit many of the local cemeteries as I can. If anyone wants full-sized copies of any of the photos, let me know. Also, I will do my best to fill any requests for photos not already taken. Jeremy Ravena
I am sorry. It was Hiram's father, Barent Ten Eyck b. 1804, who was in the Albany prison in 1870 (not Hiram). Hal, I phoned the Albany County Hall of Records. They have a Register of Prisoners 1845-1927 for the Albany County Jail. They weren't sure of the exact name at that time, but they thought it was the one located where the present VA Hospital is located. They also have a Goal Commitment Book 1868-1878. Since I was told about it, I assumed it was for the same prison. You can download a research request form. Fee is $20. For other people reading this email: A section of the New York State Library called Manuscripts & Special Collections occupies a room in the NYS Archives in Albany. I think they have most of the **state** retired prison records. A page in a prison register that I saw there had information about the prisoner and his offense, plus mugshots and pasted-in news articles. I found this bit if info that may be of interest to someone. Notes from the Newspapers Albany NY Nov 30th 1868 "The burial vault on the west side of Swan Street, north of Washington Street, which was built about the begining of the present century, and occupied by the Lush and Gansevoort families, was being demolished. Here the bones of De Witt Clinton reposed for many years. A dwelling was to be erected upon its site by B.P. Learned"

Well, after trips to 3 different libraries, I got what you need! The NY State Library has bound copies of all volumes of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. Attached is a copy of page 192 of Volume 128 Issue 3 which is July 1997. Unfortunately, the page is genealogy inquiries so you won't get much information. It does list an Elizabeth as a child though. You could try writing to the name and address given. I also Googled the woman's name and found she had message board posts up to 2001. So here's links to two of them where you can find two different email addresses to try as well. On the first message, click her name to see the email; on the other link the email is visible. http://genforum.genealogy.com/eldred/messages/339.html and http://searches2.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NJMONMOU/2000-05/0959655319 Good luck on your search. I'd love to hear about it if this leads to more information for you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Lauretta Harris was a very friendly lady who loved genealogy and helping people. I met her at the Family History Center in Loudonville (Albany Co.) when I was first starting out. I was asking a volunteer questions, but the person couldn't answer some of them. For those, an answer would come from the table behind me. Eventually, I turned around and spoke with Lauretta directly. She had written a couple of surname articles that she said would help me. I received them in the mail. Lauretta apparently enjoyed visiting cemeteries, because she transcribed many of them in Columbia and Rensselaer Counties. Her typed transcriptions can be seen at the Columbia Co. Historical Society. They were done in the days when you could only make a couple of carbon copies, so there aren't many copies of her work available for research. She also published a book called "Vital Records of the Town of Schodack, Rensselaer County, New York Prior to 1880." She told me that some of the records mentioned were collected by a genealogist whose materials were discarded when he died. Lauretta told me that she couldn't find many of the records anywhere else. Few people have contributed as much to genealogy as Lauretta Harris. Cliff -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lauretta J. Harris Harris, Lauretta J. ALBANY On March 17, 2009, Lauretta Julia Harris, daughter of the late Andrew and Sarah Stackman Petro, passed away quietly at Albany Memorial Hospital after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in 1920 in Stuyvesant, N.Y., Lauretta graduated from Martin Van Buren High School in Kinderhook and the Austin Beauty School. Lauretta was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Donald B. Harris. Lauretta was a hair dresser in Hudson for a brief period of time, and then worked at General Aniline, Fort Orange Paper Company and the state of New York Veterans Bonus Bureau, finally joining the family-owned business, Bramhall Acres Apple Farm in Schodack Landing. Lauretta was a member of the Reformed Church of Schodack at Muitzeskill, Castleton Chapter 668 (now Van Rensselaer Star) Order of the Eastern Star, serving as worthy matron twice. She was a past district deputy grand matron of the Albany-Rensselaer-Schenectady District, the 1958 Grand Officers Association and Eda Chapter OES, Kinderhook. Lauretta was active in the Columbia County Historical Society and Esquatah Historical Society. She published a book on the Vital Records of Schodack prior to 1880. Lauretta enjoyed researching genealogy on the early families of Schodack. One of her major accomplishments was to get New York State to retain the name of Schodack Island Park instead of Castleton Island Park. She loved to knit and crochet afghans for the Veterans Hospital in Albany as well as hats for underprivileged children at Christmas. She is survived by her son, David (Adele) Harris of Castleton; grandchildren, Anthony (Nikki) Harris of Montpelier, Vt., David (Sarah) Harris Jr. of Castleton, and Angelina Harris (Justin Kennedy) of Centerville, Va.; great-grandchildren, Patryk and Caitlyn Harris of Montpelier. Interment will be in the Chatham Center Cemetery on March 21, 2009 at 12 noon and a memorial service at the Muitzeskill Reformed Church to follow at 1:30. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie. Members of the Eastern Star will gather at 1:30 p.m. at the church for services. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to the OES Educational Assistance Fund, 71 W. 23rd St., New York, NY 10010, Capital District Masonic Charities, 8 Holly Lane, Castleton, NY 12033 or the Reformed Church of Schodack at Muitzeskill, Schodack Landing, NY 12156. http://www.legacy.com/TimesUnion-Albany/Obituaries.asp?Page=Lifestory&PersonId=125259875 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
