PS Thanks for the Library reference it will help fill in some of my rennselaer county data. Also ebenezer found nearby in Kinderhook, Columbia County in 1790 census. The info below helps to figure out where they were from 1770 to 1790. Ebenezer Merry Added by Becky_Irvine on 23 Mar 2008 Ebenezer Merry was born at Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut, on March 9, 1744, and baptized on March 25, 1744. As a young man, Ebenezer, resettled in Amenia, Dutchess County, New York. There, he married Elizabeth Hunt on November 1, 1770. Elizabeth, who was called Betty, was the daughter of Ambrose and Sarah Hunt of Duchess County. The Merrys then moved to Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Ebenezer and his younger brothers, Samuel and John, all served Massachusetts during the Revolutionary War. Ebenezer did not apply for a pension, however, as did his brothers. About 1772, Ebenezer moved his family to Danby, in what is now Vermont. At that time, however, prior to Vermont's independence, Danby was considered a part of Albany County, New York. Ebenezer was made a Freeman of Danby in 1778 and he was appointed a petit juror of the town in 1784. Ebenezer and Betty were listed as selling several parcels of land in Danby over the years - the last being on April 27, 1793. Ebenezer signed the bill of sale alone, which implied that Betty had already passed away. He also stated that his residence was Philips Town in the County of Rennselaerswych, New York. Ebenezer possibly was living with his son, Ambrose, at Milford, Otsego County, New York, in 1800. He was living in Nassau, New York, in 1810 (Philips Town had been renamed Nassau). If he was the same Ebenezer Merry who served in Captain Comstock's Co. in 1778 then he died in 1826 and he was buried in Orwell, Vermont.Children of Ebenezer and Elizabeth were: 1) William, born June 30, 1771, at Kent, Connecticut.2) Ambrose H.. born September 21, 1772, in Albany County, New York; died September 5, 1864, in Noble County, Ohio; married Margaret Wickham.3) Chloe Ann4) Lydia5) Richmond Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Do you know the religion of the family. Possibly one of the siblings will show up even if Ambrose doesn't. Further on Dutchess county. Dutchess County was a large area that was reworked in 1791 with Putnam County being split off. Thus some records showing Dutchess county may really be in Putnam county. also a long standing boundary dispute with CT in your time period would also put records in NY or CT. Since Merry family grounded in CT and Ebenezer's marriage recorded in Kent, CT with some saying they or possibly she was were from Amenia in Dutchess county NY give more clues. I found him in 1810 census in Milford, Otsego county, NY just west of Albany. He then seems to have gone to Ohio. Maybe a closer check of that area will find other family mebers either who travelled with him or lived nearby. a little history may help. references to Dutchess County, NY area indicates a migration pattern from Kent, CT to Amenia, NY then north to Albany and west. I found several families that did this. Also checked Pittsfield, MA Corbin Collection for the family but only found John the supposed grandfather. Possibly a history of Monroe Ohio or Milford, NY may lend some clues. Will continue looking for Ebenezer closeby to see if anything turns up. The date of birth fits with marriage of Ebenezer. Thanks to all who provided information on the Albany Prison. Very interesting. The family researchers will follow up, and I am in contact with many of them. I was in error when I said it was Hiram Ten Eyck who was in prison in 1870. It was his father Barent. J. Ten Eyck b. 1804 Berne, son of Johannes TE and Maria Weidman. He married first Christeana. In 1850 he was a shoemaker, widowed in Newark, Tioga Co. In 1860 he was a shoemaker in Knox, Albany, married to Mary with son Hiram b. 1854. (I was helping family reseachers identify his parents.) In 1870 he was a shoemaker in the Albany Penitentary. Now that I have found the father of Hiram for the family researchers, they were asking me why he was in prison and what became of him. That I do not know. I appreciate the suggestions of avenues to pursue.
