For each, it tells the year it was founded. http://www.rcda.org/parishes_albany.html A few months ago, however, it was announced that in 2009-2010 33 parish churches would be closed in the Albany Diocese which encompasses an area of about 10-12 counties. It includes 9 churches in Albany Co. To do research, it is helpful to know where the records went when the church was closed. I wrote a webpage last month which tries to answer that question. http://www.genealogy.clifflamere.com/Aid/Ch/CH-Catholic-ClosedParishes-Records.htm Cliff Lamere Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Gene Wheeler
    3. It was so good to hear from you about the Smith family.  I don't have much and what I have found came from records on Ancestry.  The only Matthew Bernard Smith I have run across is on a WWII Draft Registration Card and he was born in Cohoes but resided in New Jersey. I really don't have very many surnames but think there were some ties to the COUTEE family.  I still don't know which SMITH Family my William b.1859 came from but it looks like he married a French Canadian woman and the same with their son Alfred J.  Alfred's wife Emma could possibly be a COUTEE.  Their son Bernard is the one who married Elaine MESSIER. I was looking at the NYALBANY archives and I saw that your Matthew Bernard's family left the Cohoes area.  Possibly you know more about the Cohoes SMITH'S so I hope to hear back from you. 2. Back in the early 1970's, when I was first married, my wife and I lived at 866 Madison Ave in Albany. Across the street was the Magin and Keegan Funeral Home. Its still there. The church up the street is St. Vincent's (RG). There was a Jewish Funeral Home at 864 Madison (Schwartz). I know well the Dreis funeral home at 89 Second Ave as my parents owned 79 Second Ave. As someone pointed out, the building is now Sturges Funeral Home. Dreis is still in business, having merged with McVeigh on Allen St. I can't recall an Owens Funeral Home, but there where many of them in Albany that are now out of business. 1. [NYALBANY] The beaver dam of Berne
    2. Harold Miller
    3. When the Town of Berne was first settled over 250 ears ago, it was called Beaverdam or Beaver Dam because of its location next to a large beaver dam. The location of the dam has been lost in time (although there was a time a few years ago that I thought I had discovered it). The other day I had an inspiration, and using my computer here in my home in Oaxaca, Mexico, I found the location of the dam! I have posted the details on my blog the History and Genealogy of Berne, New York<http://berneny.blogspot.com/2009/04/beaver-dam.html>in two blogs. This link is to the first posting. Then read the followup I posted today which links or shows current Google maps. 1. [NYALBANY] Book on old Albany
    2. I thought the list might be interested in a series of books published by www.arcadiapublishers.com on a variety of American towns and groups of settlers. I've just read two on Schenectady, where I have ancestors. These books don't normally give many people by name, but do give a wonderful flavor of what the town was like in early days. I've never been to Schenectady, or likely to be able to go, so these two were very helpful. One especially helpful thing was a map of the town at the time of the 1690 massacre, showing who owned property where, and listing a few of those killed. Since I have ancestors killed in the massacre, and some who survived it, this map is invaluable to me. That website gives a list of all the books they have published. It's a little awkward, as it has dots for each city/state where they have published a book. You have to guess fairly closely in order to find what you're looking for. But it's worth it. The books are short, about 128 pages for some reason, but are chock full of photos. I recommend them. I have only one ancestor baptized in Albany, but having read the Schenectady books, now I think I'll look at the Albany book too. 1. [NYALBANY] Owens Funeral Home
    2. Gene Cassidy
    3. The site I remember well was on Madison Avenue, next to a church, the name of which I do not recall. Jimmy Owens was the man who managed the funeral of my father in 1949 and of my grandfather in 1950. The Home was across the street from The Magin & Keegan Funeral Home which existed in the early '80s and from which my mother was buried. Jimmy Owens was a tiny guy who wore a top hat during the proceedings. It's a picture I'll never forget. In the rear of the main floor was a kitchen to which relatives repaired during the course of the wake and where even kids like me shared in sips of whisky. gene cassidy

    3. I called a local funeral home. The person I talked with had been in the business only five years. He did not know of a regulation that controlled where the records go when a funeral home closes. He did say that burial information has to be preserved for 30 years. He thought that if a funeral home was bought by another, records older than 30 years might get shredded. I think that a funeral home probably would keep all of their own records until they go out of business. I phoned Manuscripts & Special Collections, a part of the NYS Library. They apparently do get some of the retired funeral home records, because they asked me the name of the funeral home. There was a pause and I was told they do not have the ones for Owens Funeral Chapel.
