An interesting article in Sunday's, June 3, 2012 edition of the Times Union made a connection with a name that is also listed in a new Troy Irish Genealogy Society, data base that is currently being worked on. (TIGS website address: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ ) On Page 6 of the Unwind Section, there is an article "Charming Spot For Tea And More" about a new teahouse located in a farmhouse built by Revolutionary War veteran Ebenezer Hills, Jr. in 1785. The article goes on to say that it became the infamous trysting spot of Van Rensselaer scion Elsie Whipple and handyman Jesse Strang, whose affair led to the murder of Elsie's husband at Cherry Hill Farm. The hanging of Strang in 1827, Albany's last public execution, drew 30,000 spectators. The new TIGS project being worked on is the removals from the old State Street Burial Grounds, now the site of Washington Park in Albany. The "Cherry Hill" mention immediately caught my attention as on Saturday I was working on the removal names of those individuals that were reburied in St. Peter's Episcopal Church Cemetery and I remembered having just typed an entry that mentioned "Cherry Hill" That entry, that I typed on Saturday which makes the connection with the story in today's Times Union, was as follows: John Whipple, age 34, died May 7, 1827. Whipple was the son of a Revolutionary War Officer. He was murdered at Cherry Hill. Thought this email would be of interest to list members. Bill McGrath Clifton Park, NY .
