    3. Were there any other religious sisters, other than the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, in the Troy area in the 1880 time frame? Does anyone know how to locate their order in the census? I know they had an orphanage and probably a school. I am trying to find 2 relatives -Margaret Gleason b @1866 and her sister Harriet b @1875. They are not in the 1900 census. So they either died between 1880 and 1900, married or went into the convent. Since they are not in the family plot, they could be in a religious plot or married and in their spouses' plots. Sisters of St. Joseph's doesn't have either of them. Kathleen S. PS Where will the July 19 meeting take place?

    3. Have you used the New York State Vital Records indices? They start in 1880, though spotty for the first 20 or 30 years as compliance with the law improved. Not online, the microfiche are available at a number of library facilities in NYS. This is the link to the info page: http://www.archives.nysed.gov/a/research/res_topics_gen_vitalstats.shtml In what parish did these individuals reside (at birth, and at last 'sighting'? Or, if you do not know, what address(es)? That would give list users a decent starting point. - smb -------------------------------------------------- From: "Kathleen Secker" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2012 3:51 PM To: <[email protected]> Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Religious sisters > Were there any other religious sisters, other than the Sisters of St. > Joseph of Carondelet, in the Troy area in the 1880 time frame? 3. Not sure about the situation in other parishes or institutions, but the Sisters of Mercy arrived in St. Patrick's parish, West Troy (Watervliet) in 1872, joined by the Sisters of the Presentation in 1881. The Daughters of Charity were also active in the Troy area from 1848 on. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Kathleen Secker" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2012 3:51 PM To: <[email protected]> Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Religious sisters > Were there any other religious sisters, other than the Sisters of St. > Joseph of Carondelet, in the Troy area in the 1880 time frame? 3. Hi Kathleen. In the 1880 Census there is a Margaret Gleason aged 14 living with her family in the 10th Ward of Troy at 272 N. Second St. If you go to the Pat Connors website from the TIGS website there is a wealth of information. Her site is wonderful. Click on resources and then scroll down to websites to the Connors website. Good Luck. Ps.. in the 1865 NYS census there is a Margaret who is 10 years old and 1/2 orphan ! living at an orphan home. You can find this through Pat's site also.
