Hi TIGS and Kris! For some reason last night I got curious again about the John Boland mentioned below in the missing friends ad that Kris Cooney had so kindly looked up for me. Years back I had poked around on ancestry.com and there were sparse records for AU so I just gave up and accepted that I would probably never find a breadcrumb that would lead me to this brother of my GGgrandfather Lawrence Boland who migrated to Melbourne. But as it turns out Ancestry must have added quite a few more sources for Australia. I ended up finding an indexed death record that was the correct name, approximate age to be a brother, and with both correct parents names. I was also able to use index parameters to find a short list of marriages and births (of John Boland children) that could be for the correct John Boland, and some turned out to be for the right person. Then I located 2 trees that had been posted since I last looked with the name John Boland 1831-1880 and the one listed him from Ballymore, Westmeath and with the same parents (with matching maiden name) as my Lawrence Boland. I was pretty glad to find that, haven't had that little genealogy discovery 'rush' in a while. I contacted the 2 people who posted the trees and one responded quickly, so far. John Boland married a Catherine Cooney (born Jan 1833 in Galway, Ireland) in Victoria AU in 1861. What is even more interesting is that their daughter Catherine Boland, married an Edmund Crowe, who was born in Emly, Tipperary in 1850. The woman in AU who emailed me also said that much of the Crowe family from Emly , emigrated to Troy, NY.... Edmund Crowes parents were Patrick Crowe born 22 MAY 1815 in Breansha, Emly, Tipperary, Ireland. Mother was Eleanor Hanley born 17 DEC 1820 in Lisobyhane, Emly, Tipperary, Ireland. Just wondering if Crowe is an interest of any of the TIGS members?? Never say never. -Michael > From: [email protected] > Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 21:23:25 -0500 > Subject: Re: [TIGS] BOLAND - Irish Relatives and Friends 1850-1871 > To: [email protected] > > Hope this is yours Mike......Nothing on Bernard.....Kristin > > Of JOHN BOLAND, formerly of BALLYMORE, County WESTMEATH, Ireland. Hello, Mike, Just want to alert you to the fact that there were Crow(e)s too in St. Bridget's Parish in West Rutland, VT, according to the parish census of 1857. They were: Michael Crow, 28, wife Mary Farrell, 22, and three-month old Hugh Crow. In addition, the wife of Timothy Carroll, 38, was Honnor Crow, 32, and they had a son Timothy, age 2. I wonder whether there is any connection between them and the Crows in Troy, especially since there was so much back-and-forth between the two places, given their proximity and connection via rail lines. Just FYI, Mary Lee Dunn GGgrandfather -----Original Message----- From: M McAlonie <[email protected]> To: NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC-L <[email protected]> Sent: Fri, Sep 7, 2012 8:39 am Subject: Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] [TIGS] BOLAND - Irish Relatives and Friends 1850-1871 Hi TIGS and Kris! I have been contacted back by three different people who are peripherally connected to these long lost AU Bolands. One recommended a very useful link ... http://trove.nla.gov.au/ to do some further research. It was great. Would highly recommend it for searching for people in AU in digitized newspapers, even pre 1850s, to mid 1900s. Books, all sorts of stuff digitized and indexed. In less than 5 minutes I had found a missing friend / family ad by Patrick Boland formerly of Ballymore Westmeath looking for his brother John Boland, ( a brother which I had found a baptism for in Ballymore but had no idea what had happened to), with a location in Victoria. Then I sadly found Patrick's obituary' listed as the brother of John in 1861. I then checked ancestry.com and there was a Patrick died 1861 in Victoria AU with Parents Patrick and Catherine Boland, with no maiden name given. Now, to locate brother Thomas!! And the parents?? Incidentally, I did not find any evidence so far that the 1866 missing family ad placed by Lawrence Boland in Troy NY was ever in fact 'copied' by Melbourne newpapers. Sad, brothers who actually want to speak never getting to get back in touch. I guess that was par for the diaspora. when it rains it pours. best, Michael ps you locals... where is Dickie Boland, now he has some new cousins to go visit!! pps unfortunately, no relations to Russel Crowe... > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Date: Fri, 7 Sep 2012 08:39:03 -0400 > Subject: Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] [TIGS] BOLAND - Irish Relatives and Friends 1850-1871 > > > Hi TIGS and Kris! > For some reason last night I got curious again about the John Boland mentioned below in the missing friends ad that Kris Cooney had so kindly looked up for me. I was watching a 'who do you think you are' that I dvr'd a while ago, about Jason Sudekis. In it they referenced two different coroners inquests that appeared to be quite detailed. Has anyone ever gotten a coroners inquest from a municipality and/ or would anyone know how to go about getting one, for the 1900s. thanks, Michael
Michael, Some time ago I looked into how to find coroners' reports from years past. I recall even calling the Police Chief's office for the City of Troy. I was told that any coroner's inquest records were the property of the individual who held that position at the time. The records were "probably stored in a garage somewhere" during the tenure of the person. There was no continuity or transfer of the records when a new coroner took over. At some point that probably changed, of course, but any coroner records from the late 1800's or early 1900's likely no longer exist. If anyone has had a different experience with coroners' records, I would love to know about it.
