A couple of questions. it sounds like many records are possibly stored by Mr Hanley.does he keep these in his own home?? I don't understand why these are not being properly stored by the diocese and/or in a controlled or at least locked fireproof safe by a Church or Churches. No offense to Mr Hanley or any others but storing records in this way is usually how in so many years records are found in someones garage. I'm wondering if perhaps TIGS could help organize a Albany catholic Audit of these records. It seems like no one knows where and in what condition so many of these records are stored. it would also be a great service if we could get the diocese to standardize hoe these records can be accessed. I've encountered prices ranging from $25.oo donation per family to something similar per family. meanwhile the Diocesan archivist has told me several times that parishes should NOT be asking for fees or a donations. My main concern in asking about St Peter's was that I was told in a phone call that there were boxes of records. Not just students records but boxes of things in the Church basement. Does anyone know who I might be able to contact to find out about these boxes. The discussion about possible parochial school records for St. Peter's (in Troy) is a whole separate situation than what is available at the Immac. Heart of Mary Archives in Watervliet (where Tom Hanley is the archivist). The records at Immac. Heart of Mary are at the archives office in the church and are very well cared for. They include records for many of the now closed Watervliet churches (Albany County). Vital records for St. Peter's church (in Troy, Rensselaer Co.) are now housed at St. Anthony's church (in Troy). I would assume that the Secretary at St. Anthony's would also know about any possible school records that were related to St. Peter's school. She is the same person who was Secretary at St. Peter's before it closed. And if she doesn't know, perhaps a call to the Diocesan Archives in Albany would be in order. I can't imagine that there are still boxes of records stored at the now closed St. Peter's church or school, but anything is possible. these records are stored in a fashion you would expect of a museum archivist to handle them, in locked cabinets in a locked , clean office, white cotton gloves, etc. Mr Hanley has done a meticulous job maintaining, cataloging, and most especially indexing them to make our genealogy searches much much easier. The $20 fee is nominal and very reasonable. And compared to the $10-20 per record search that many feel is appropriate for a request, $20 for a family is way more than reasonable. I dont know about records at other Albany diocese parishes, but be assured that those now under the care of Mr Hanley at IHOM Parish are meticulously and respectfully maintained and cared for. Tom Hanley is a professional. And when anyone contacts these individuals in care of these RCDA records I Think we would all agree that we should be extremely polite and patient, as I am sure these folks are volunteers or are not paid much at all, so as to not ruin it for the rest of us when our requests are made. Everything costs money. Why dont people start talking about raising and donating money to help defray the costs of maintaining and indexing these records to help out those who have dedicated their time and efforts to preserving them like Tom Hanley has done. Michael, I do not know your relationship to the IHOM, and that's not really important, but thank you for your insight. When I dealt with Tom two years age I also found the same things you mentioned. In fact the Diocesan record keepers could learn a thing or two from him.
