Were there censuses for these years and did all counties have to participate? I am trying to locate 1885 in Montgomery Co. -Amsterdam City, NY. Where would I find them?Kathleen S
If the census is extant there should be a copy in the county where it was taken and one at the New York State Library in Albany. Also Check with the Mormon Library in Salt Lake. There was no NYS census for 1885 nor 1895. There was one for 1892, however. Montgomery County returns are extant for all NYS censuses from 1855 on. Available on microfilm from the LDS libraries. The 1865, 1875, 1892 and 1905 returns are also on line at FamilySearch.org. (While all counties were included, many county returns for individual censuses are lost or missing. You're in pretty good luck for Montgomery county.) -------------------------------------------------- From: "Kathleen Secker" <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 24, 2012 4:52 PM To: <[email protected]> Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] census for 1855,1865,1875,1885,1895 > Were there censuses for these years and did all counties have to > participate? Does anyone know offhand whether St. Joseph's in South Troy would have lists of the graduating classes from St. Joseph's Academy? I have a group photo dated 1931 and believe my uncle is in it but I'd like to confirm.
Lynn, and all listers, I checked at St. Joseph's rectory and found out that the school records were sent to Sacred Heart School for safekeeping/storage when St. Joseph's school closed. I also inquired about other records. They have not received any thing from the firm that was to publish the transcribed documents. According to Bill McGrath there has been some delay in the publishing process due to some deaths in the chain of command at the publishing company. The church secretary told me the current procedure for researching issues is to write out what exactly you are looking for and supply her with as much information as you can relative to topic, and any dates and specific names. She will do the research in the documents which are no longer available to the public. I have not yet tried Sacred Heart School but I will over the next couple of days attempt to find out what records they have and how accessible those records are.
