Re: Searching For Marriage Records: Here are some suggestions: 1. The TIGS website www.troyirish.com has the following marriage records on-line: a. Marriages Found in a collection at the Burden Iron Co. b. The Troy Newspaper Project. Many different Troy newspaper records. c. West Troy Advocate. d. Rensselaer County Marriages - 60,000 marriages starting in 1908 2. We are currently working on marriages from late 1700's to mid 1800's reported in 10 different Lansingburgh newspapers. Residence of bride and groom is from all over New York State as well as the Troy area. I have the 4,000-5,000 names and can do a look-up if your interest goes back that far. 3. Were your relatives Catholic? The Troy Library has marriage records from the following Troy Catholic churches: St. Patrick's St. Mary's St. Jean de Baptiste St. Lawrence Holy Trinity St. Joseph's 4. On the TIGS website under RESOURCES and then LOOK UP'S IRISH ACTS OF KINDNESS you will find volunteers who have some of the above church books and will do look ups. 5. Reporting of marriages in New York State was effective in 1880 but compliance was spotty in the early years. The Vital Statistics Office of the City of Troy (not the Court House) has information on marriages from those early years but they are expensive, about $22.00 per request. So unless you have a specific year for your request you could pay a lot of money and then find nothing. 6. My recommendation is to try the Syracuse, NY library which has copies of the New York State Vital Records (births, deaths, marriages) on microfiche. They will do a free lookup for you if you send them an email. Their email address is: lhg@onlib.org You need to give them an approximate year date range. 7. If the Syracuse library finds the record they will give you the date, location of the marriage and a reference number. You can then decide to go to the government office in the city where the marriage took place or to the NYS Dept of Health in Albany. It is my impression that the Dept of Health has a more detailed record than the one you would receive from a city like Troy but requests to this agency takes forever for a response. Troy, however, is much quicker to respond. Hope the above helps. Regards, Bill McGrath Clifton Park, NY >I would like to find the marriage records of my parents? Where do I go for > this? Thanks!
Thanks Bill, this certainly gives me many avenues. It will be interesting to start digging. Sent from my iPhone > On Sep 7, 2014, at 2:32 PM, "Bill & Cathy McGrath" <seamus@nycap.rr.com> wrote: > >
