    3. Chris, Wow! Now what can be done to identify (possibly with historical markers) the area. I have some thoughts but prefer to speak at TIGS meeting this month. My mind goes like a choo, choo train thinking about this cemetery. Onto the next part. Thank you again for sharing this information with us. Do you have a contact person that I might contact to get a copy of the CD? To excerpt some points with respect to the cemetery: Hartgen found “no record of burials being removed from this cemetery and reinterred elsewhere” and noted “Archeological excavations in cities throughout United States including local investigations completed by Hartgen in Albany, Colonie, Glens Falls, and Rome, New York have shown that removal and reinterment was rare.” They dug some shallow trenches and found evidence of burials that had never been disturbed, i.e. no disinterments had ever been made for those burials. “The grave shafts were uncovered about 12 inches (30.5 cm) below the current ground surface. Hartgen did not explore the shafts by digging deeper. Also, no human remains, traces of coffins, or coffin hardware were found. This suggests that the burials are intact and have not been disturbed by subsequent activities.” > > Hartgen had marked boundaries with “pin flags and flagging” based on the 1873 Young and Blake map and 1881 Hopkins map. I don’t entirely understand their reasoning, since they seemingly put a lot of faith in the exact accuracy of the old maps and the exact accuracy of their overlay. > > Regarding the ten-foot tall cross: “the size and concrete and iron rebar construction suggest that it is associated with the 20th-century monastery and not the cemetery.” > > Presumably because they were advising avoidance of the site and because that advice is going to be followed, no exhaustive search was made for grave markers, there was no attempt to determine the location of all the burials within the site, etc. > > Chris > ===NY-IRISH-GENSOC Mailing List=== > Time for Society Members to pay up their **2014 Dues**. Marking the cemetery or further investigating it is not something Hartgen’s archaeology report for Omni Group addresses other than the monitoring that would be done during construction and also their recommendation for some fencing: “Construction fencing should be placed along the western and northern site limits. Fencing should also be installed along the southern site limits once archeological monitoring is complete to further protect the site. When project plans are finalized, Hartgen recommends preparing a written avoidance plan, monitoring plan, and unanticipated discoveries plan in consultation with OPRHP.” There *might* be some kind of plans to mark it: "A cemetery was also found on the property, which will be marked as part of the project.” Sanzone, Danielle. "Residents concerned that proposed dorm will only add to existing traffic problems." Troy Record. I don’t know. One place to try asking: “The next public discussion regarding the proposed dorm will take place during the City of Troy Planning Board Meeting scheculed [sic] for 6 p.m. on Sept. 11 at City Hall.” I can see if maybe Hartgen’s report can be posted online. Also, not that this has anything to do with the dorms, but one wishes something could be done to save the Vandenbergh house/Country Grove restaurant across from HVCC which is looking pretty forlorn.
