Sunday July 13,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years ago Monday July 13 1908 “Hazel Drew is buried today is the 20 year old domestic servant found in Teals Farm Pond .Investigators believe she was killed on or around July 6th by a blow to the head. Drew’s family buries her at Barbersville Cemetery in Poestenkill near her birthplace, with Rev J.H.E. Rickard of Third Street Methodist Church officiating. The family originally ordered a plot dug at MT Ida Cemetery before deciding on the Poestenkill site.Drew’s uncle , William Taylor of Sand Lake was a person of interest briefly ,if only because investigators theorized she went to Sand Lake to visit him. Mr Taylor tells reporters he hasn't seen her since a 3 week visit last winter .William Gundrum,35 year old farmer and charcoal burner, and Frank Smith,17, who is said to be “rather weak mentally,” say they saw Hazel ‘ on the hollow” west of the highway leading to the Taylor farm. Previously, the last person known to have seen Drew alive was her aunt Minnie Taylor, who told investigators Drew visited her on the morning of July 6th.She had just left the employ of Prof E.R. Cary and told her aunt she planned to go to Watervliet, and boarded a streetcar for that destination on Pawling Avenue. A report of a previous attack near Teals Pond on Bertha Neustiel, who lives near Crapes Hotel on the road to East Poestenkill who fought off 2 men, raises the possibility that a serial attacker killed Drew.
