    3. In the latest TIGS newsletter there was a great discussion of finding your Civil War Ancestors. I checked out the websites suggested and found as expected that the name of my husband's relative, James Martin, is too common to identify without the unit he served in. Were there any units formed specifically in Troy? He was born in Ireland. I remember that looking at the index file cards for the Revolutionary War, that the place of birth was helpful in finding the right person. Thank you for any suggestions that will help. J. Martin

    3. Brian I am not familiar with the Civil War units from Renessalaer county but a call to your local historical society or public library should give you the regiments formed from counties in Eastern New York. Also a quick call to the NY State Military Museum library should also prove useful. Martin<< The best known of the Troy organizations was the 2nd NY State Volunteer Infantry which was organized right at the start of the Civil War and served until it was mustered out in May of 1863 at the end of a two-year enlistment. My GrGrandfather served for the two years as a 1st Lieutenant and his brother-in-law, Col. Joseph B. Carr, was the organizing commander of the regiment and rose to Maj. General by the end of the war. You can get to some of the rosters of other regiments recruiting in the area at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyrensse/soldiers.htm. Also go to http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/historic/reghist/civil/infantry/civil_infIndex.h tm Where you will find the 2nd and the other regiments, 30th, 125th and 169th also in more detail with respect to the enlisted men. You will find the units just identified as 'Infantry Regiment'. They were not National Guard. Hope this gives you a beginning. I don't think James Martin was in the 2nd. Brad Miter

    3. Among other units formed in Troy were the 30th NY Volunteer Infantry and the 21st New York Cavalry. There were others.
