Brad, my husband and I own land on Taborton Mountain almost to the Old Dutch Church and cemetary at the top. We know a ton of Teals, our favorites Eleanor and Clayton are now gone but there kids are around. You probably knew the Daytons or the Ernst's. You know they have a Buffalo farm on that mountain now. Kris, My two Troy cousins, Frank and David Miter, inherited the family camp from their dad, my uncle Tom. Unfortunately, a friend of Franks sons was allowed to use the camp and he burned it down so we have not had much contact with the locals for 25 or so years. There were 6 first cousins and 5 of us went in together to purchase the land from the brothers as they were going to sell it. We thought that maybe one of our children might want to buy it when they got some money together as they grew older. Taxes were not too much. When no children wanted it, we finally sold the property about 10 years ago to the guy next door who denuded the whole area of trees for his year-round house on the south side of the lake on Taborton Rd. We figure we made 7% on our initial investment and so nothing lost. Of the natives in Taborton, we knew Gus Meyers and his wife Florence very well. They lived in a house right next to the church and had land in back of the camps on the east side of Big Bowman. They were childless and I don't recall when they died. Gus did handyman labor and made charcoal. I remember one of our family members saying that Florence had some money which kept them going. Back before my uncle put in a well on our property we would fill a 5-gallon glass jug at the Meyer's well for drinking water. We used lake water for washing. I asked my cousin Dave just now to go take a look for the buffalo. He did not know about them. He lives in W Sand Lake but it is just too upsetting for him to go by our camp. The fellow who bought the Kern camp next door just ruined the area by clearing off the old timber. I'm related to the Kerns through my mother's side.
