Wednesday May7,2008TroyRecord Article100yearsagoThursday May 7,, 1908 “Charles Blange, a manager and cook at Essex Lunch Restaurant at 376 River Street Is badly injured when a boiler explodes, scalding him. Harry Hamil, an employee has a slight facial injury but is treated and sent home. No one else is injured. William A. Lockwood, an acting sergeant in the Fourth Precint,is arrested on the complaint of M.L. Osborn, a Lansingburgh truant officer, for keeping his daughter out of school for the past 60 days. Lockwood says the girl is sick but has refused to provide any medical excuse. The Carrington trial- Prosecution witness James H. Greaton, the current chief clerk of the Treasury in Troy, explains the rushed collection process for taxes. Clerks stacked payments on a counter until they ran out of room to work at which point they dumped the cash into a waste basket.He testifies that Carrington then took the basket away to be counted by temporary clerks borrowed from local banks.
