Milton Thompson of the Ninth Presbyterian Church states it was not his thought that any action would be taken looking to the removal of the mayor.Other ministers were stunned by the petition and Rev A.C.Sewall of Second Street Presbyterian Church leads the opposition to Stockwell's petition to the governor to remove the mayor. He introduces a resolution to rescind the document- it fails by a 25-13 margin. Some of the dissident ministers put forth the theory that this is Edwin S. Harris and his lawyer John T. Norton in an attempt to get back at the mayor for trying to remove Harris from office.Reverend Morgan S. Post of Third Presbyterian Church says he heard Mr. Norton had only recently defended liquor interests. The majority finally agrees on a compromise,an amended resolution, asking Gov Hughes to delay action on Stockwells petition until next week ,giving the mayor one more chance to enforce the law.
