Friday February 8 2008Troy Record Article 100years agoSaturday February 8,1908 “The American Ice Company has abruptly halted ice harvesting activity in the vicinity of Albany putting 70 men out of work. Superintendent William Flynn says it is a complete surprise, having just filled their Beverwyck Island ice house with 10,000 tons of excellent ice between 10 and 12 inches in thickness. They were just starting to fill the Mould House in Rensselaer with 40,000 tons. The Record speculates that Agitation in favor of legislation averse to the cutting of ice from the Hudson River in this vicinity may have had something to do with it. It is based on complaints that American Ice has harvested from areas tainted by sewage and industrial waste, but American Ice denies this. The Laureate Boat Club votes to petition the national governing body for reinstatement of standout athlete Ed Wachter, who was banned from the club for playing as a professional. Wachter will eventually be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
