Sunday September 6,2008TroyRecord Article 100years ago Monday Sept 6,1908 “Young manhood and young womanhood took precedence over all else at ceremonies of ‘Old Home Week” at Prospect Park and 12th Street (modern 112th St) Parks .Prospect hosts the largest crowd in its young existence between 20,000 and 25,000 people overwhelm the trolley system and force many spectators to walk up the hill. The appearance of the automobile and its distinguished guest, the Governor, was the signal for an outburst of enthusiasm from the crowd. Gov Hughes reviews a parade of approx 1500 Sunday School students marching to the tune of Onward Christian Soldiers and led by Gen. James H. Lloyd of the NYS National Guard. Nearly all the children dressed in white and proudly carried American Flags which they held above their head and waved to and fro.All denominations, irrespective of creed ,intermingled. The Governor says he has traveled the world but the most beautiful sight is that of boys and girls waving the American flag. ‘Fellow citizens, these are your resources; we desire to conserve our natural resources;we pride ourselves upon the riches of the country, in mine, in forest, and in field , but these are our true resources without which all else fails. Our great object must be ,if we would avail ourselves of the bounties of Nature and make good use of the priceless opportunity that is ours, to conserve the manhood and womanhood of the country by taking good care of the boys and girls.” **************One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail.
