Olmstead is captured at the home of R. H. Wilcox in New Haven, 3 miles outside the town of North Guilford. He is accompanied by Lydia Yetto, age 16(17 as reported by the New Haven newspaper).Yetto is “good looking and unusually large for her age” . On the night of August 22,behaving suspiciously by being found dressed for an outing at 11pm,he told his wife he must have gotten dressed in his sleep. Lydia Yetto was found missing the next day and an investigation began, first to Saugerties where they briefly visited Olmsteads Aunt Julia Hart, then to New York City where Olmstead borrowed 5$ from his uncle Theodore Hart. Detective McGuire then went to Boston where he learned the couple doubled back to the uncle before embarking for Morris Cove. There McGuire learned the couple had stayed with John Herrick , a former Troy resident and coworker of Olmstead.. They then hired a rig and set out for Guilford, where the police caught up with them.
