Tuesday History has already been made by the seating of Lucy M. Clark of Utah as the first female voting delegate to a Republican Convention. She is an ardent woman's suffragist and although chosen as an alternative , moves up when a delegate cant make it to Chicago. Wednesday 491 votes are needed to get a first –ballot victory. Sen Henry Cabot Lodge speaks and when he says the words Theodore Roosevelt the convention erupts into an ecstatic uproar which lasts for almost an hour.Thursday Taft gets 702 delegate votes on the first ballot. He has served as Gouvernor of the Philippine Islands and Secretary of War under Roosevelt, but has never before run for elective office, rising thru the judicial ranks.. A plank in the Republican platform that is controversial is the judicial practice of issuing injunctions against striking labor unions for violating the Sherman Anti Trust act. It is included .Friday- the Vice President will be James Schoolcraft Sherman of Utica, NY, who wins 816 delegate votes on the first ballot. Former Lieutenant Gov Timothy L. Woodruff places Sherman's name in nomination noting that no Republican ticket has been defeated when a New York man was on it, save once and that was when the opposing party was bright enough to put a New York man at the head of their ticket(Democrat Grover Cleveland 1884) Also Sunday- an Italian Festival kicks off with a Italian band thru Troy,stopping to serenade Italian businesses on the route. The city is decorated with decorations including the colors of Italy.It will conclude tomorrow with fireworks. Also Tuesday- 57 students graduate RPI engineers at the Troy Bank Music Hall. Nine of the graduates are Troy residents, three are from Cuba.
