Friday June 27, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoSaturday June 27 , 1908 “Final plans have been made for next weeks 4th of July celebration with a sham battle at Rensselaer Park as the main event.The Troy Elks are the main sponsor this year and will parade in their new uniform .The uniforms are white duck trousers,white shoes , white shirts, white hats , white umbrellas,purple neckties and purple belts. After the parade the marchers will enjoy a lunch at the state armory before marching to Union Station where a special Boston and Maine train will take them to Rensselaer Park. There the National Guard units will execute drills between heats of trotters racing.They pit Joe Gahm, owned by Porter S. Oakley against Enoch, owned by William T. Shyne.Thomas W. Hislop is the Grand Marshall. Then comes the main attraction, the sham battle where an estimated 7000 rounds of ammunition will be fired. William Sidney Nicholson, a plant supervisor at the Husdon River Telephone company’s Albany office is traveling on Willow Glen Road on his way back from Lake George and swerves to avoid a farmer horse drawn wagon near Mechanicville,overturning his automobile and is killed when his neck is broken.Mrs Nicholson suffers 2 broken ribs, his mother-in –law and a preachers daughter ,Miss Brown, riding in the car are uninjured.” **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go.
