Sunday June 29 008TroyRecord Article 100years ago Monday June 29,1908 “ The Prospect Park playground opens for the summer with ceremonies befitting an important civic event.It is operated by the Womens Improvement League and supervised by Troy schoolteachers.The principal speaker, besides the Mayor, is Rev Chauncey B. Magill of Memorial Presbyterian Church who says Troy is one of the pioneer cities in the country in having a public playground. It is German Day and the parade was canceled but activities go on at Young’s Grove which includes a children's carnival. The little girls were dressed in pretty frocks while the boys were attired in white waists and dark trousers.They marched under the trees ,singing. There is also a athletic demonstration by the Troy Turn Verein and a speech by Troy's leading German citizen Werner Strecker, a druggist and insurance agent who is also president of the German – American Alliance Club .Membership has jumped from 16,000 to 36,000 in 1907 and is open only to naturalized American citizens. **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go.
