Monday April7, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years ago Tuesday April 7,, 1908 “Agnes Johnson’s body was found at 1pm at the foot of the rear stairway at Mary (MAME) Fay’s establishment on Sixth Ave near Broadway. She was a dishwasher and cleaning woman. Two weeks ago, she went to the Second Precinct station to complain that her boyfriend, Antonio Mowroni also known as Antonio Romina, was beating her. She was advised to swear out a warrant the next morning but she never returned. A woman living at a Read Alley house frequented by Johnson tells police that Mowroni, brandishing a stiletto knife, announced to the woman that Johnson had jilted him and he would kill her if he found her. The occupant chased him away with a frying pan. About 1030 pm. Occupants of MAME Fay’s find Johnson’s body after hearing a knocking noise in the rear of the building. Within minutes, 2nd Precinct Captain Rohn orders his entire reserve out in pursuit of Mowroni. He boards at a house At Ferry and Fourth, but searching his room only turns up a stiletto in a satchel. Police say he has had considerable trouble with his countrymen and has likely left town. PS if you click on the below link it will take you to the Troy Record newspaper website.
