Monday July 28 ,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoTuesday July 28,1908 “ William Taft accepts the nomination for Republican presidential candidate.Taft was nominated in Chicago last month, but since candidates customarily stay away from conventions, in order to look like they were electioneering for themselves, a committee goes to Tafts home amid pomp and pageantry.A cannon salute greets the train,while the committee joins a massive parade to Taft's home.The streets are bedecked with patriotic bunting while daylight fireworks sound throughout the city.Taft gives a speech which ,although long & dry occasionally points to the differences between himself and Democratic candidate William Jennings Bryan. Tuesday July 29 ,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoWednesday June 29 , 1908 “Henry Gilfeather(reported as Gallagher on July 26th’s Troy Record was found without a coat and with a hat several sizes too large for him.When Gilfeather was shown to Samuel Etoll, a gunshot victim, Etoll said he would not be positive it was his assailant.Since then Morris Kirkpatrick received a letter from a Salem businessman who employed Gilfeather for 5 years and wrote that his character was good. The magistrate , Abbott Jones, dismisses all charges but orders him to leave Troy.”Fare thee well, this means goodby”,Gilfeather is quoted as saying, “It will be back to the farm for mine”.
