Saturday July 26, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoSunday July 26 , 1908 “Samuel Etoll of 1456 Fifth Avenue is shot when he opens the door to rapping and the question”Have you any nice girls in there?”.Doctors say he was shot near the heart ,with the bullet lodging between the 5th & 6th ribs, but he hardly feels it as he runs after 2 men fleeing the scene. He grabs the tallest one, not the shooter and hangs onto him until the fellow's hat falls off.He could not hold the man and then went after the second shooter before he dropped to the ground and that was the last he remembers until waking up in the hospital. As Etoll is taken by an ambulance to the hospital, the police conduct a manhunt for a hatless man,who will stick out in the crowd of 1908.The police pounce on Roderick Burrows at the corner of 5th and Congress ,a machinist who lives at 207 Fourth Street ,who says he spent the night in a doorway after getting drunk “down the river”. The police are inclined to think him innocent. Etoll describes his assailant, with the help of an interpreter,as short and stout with dark hair and a small dark mustache. The accomplice was a tall man with dark hair and a sandy mustache wearing a dirty gray suit. Authorities believe it follows a feud which has existed for some time among several Syrian families. The police later in the day arrest Henry Gallagher from Salem who matches the description of one of the assailants." **************New MapQuest Local shows what's happening at your destination.
