Sunday August 10, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years ago Monday August 10 , 1908 “Saratoga County Sherriff John Bradley Jr. who is accused by Dr. Walter Laidlaw of failing to enforce the strict new provisions of NY anti-racetrack gambling law.Laidlaw,representing the anti racetrack Gambling Campaign Committee, claims Sheriff Bradley’s attention was specifically called to violations of the anti-racetrack gambling laws by committee members but gambling was still permitted and bookmakers were permitted to carry on their business during the current Saratoga racing season.The committee also accuses Bradley of permitting his deputies to allow and connive at violations of said law and that there has not been an arrest since the meet began. Bradley has retained state senator Edgar T. Brackett as his attorney and intends to fight the charges. William Pfaff takes saloon keeper John Mulkerin to court over an alleged assault last Saturday only to be accused of assault himself by Mulkerin’s brother Joseph. Pfaff was found bleeding outside the saloon at the corner of Congress and Fourth by patrolman Ruff. Pfaff said there was a little difficulty and Mulkerin struck him over the head several times with a billy club.The patrolman was compelled to use force when Mulkerin refused to surrender the billy club.
