The Republican party does this by following James S. Sherman back to Utica to tell him he is the running mate of William Howard Taft. Politicians in the 19th and early 20th century weren't supposed to look like they were promoting themselves for office. Taft isn't there but Secretary of State Elihu Root is there .Incoming trains brought throngs of visitors while inter –urban trolleys from points as far west as Syracuse were crowded to capacity. Bands played and the train carrying the nominating committee is given a 19 gun salute. Patriotic decorations are everywhere and a big electrical sign of welcome is hung on an old bridge. Following the official notification by Missouri senator Julius C.
