    1. Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Troy Brewery Trivia
    2. How many of you knew that between 1885 and 1960 there were, at different times, as many as 16 breweries operating in Troy? During the year 1885, nearly 170,000 barrels of ale, porter and lager were brewed in Troy. On 9/25/1963 fire wrecked the Stanton Brewing Company and the Fitzgerald Brewery burned on 11/1/1964. People doing research, knowing their ancester worked for a brewery, have a tendency to think of Stanton, Quandts or Fitzgeralds however they could have worked for one of the lesser known; "Samuel Bolton and Sons", "Conway Brothers & Kane", "Donohue,Tierney & Isengart", "Kennedy & Murphy","Stoll's", "Kirchners", "Ruschers", "Troy Brewing Co.", "Cold Spring Brewery" "Daly's", "Gaffigah Brothers", "Hoghen,Thomas" or "Edward Tracy". The last two were "Maltsters", not acutal breweries. This gives you an idea of why there were so many taverns in Troy, someone had to sell and drink what was produced.
