    3. Hi Listers, I like to welcome Amy LaPietra to the TIGS Mailing List. Below you will find her family history. As always, any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Lizette Amy LaPietra wrote: Hi. I just happened across the Irish in Troy website. I am the granddaughter of Michael E Sweeney who lived at 683 Burden Ave. in Troy with his family. I always heard him tell the story of how his mother Ellen (Brady) and father John died within days of each other in July of 1897. He always said that his mother was working hard doing laundry in the heat of the day on the second floor and had heat stroke. What was listed on her death certificate was Thermic convulsions. She died two days after collapsing and my great grandfather died the day of her funeral. My grandfather was orphaned at 16. He also always told us the story of going down his backyard to the shore of the Hudson and swimming to Watervliet so I know he lived in South Troy. Coincidentally, a century later I met and married an Italian from South Troy by way of Naples. What are the chances of that ? I have found other evidence that a Patrick Sweeney lived at 685 Burden Ave. These are two buildings (still standing) ! side by side. I was wondering if this Patrick Sweeney is related to me. After the great grandparents died the family scattered somewhat. My grandfather was sent to a military school down the Hudson somewhere where he worked his way through by taking care of the students there and odd jobs around the school. He subsequently became a very successful paving contractor, doing many roads in the Adirondacks and Florida as well as in and around Rochester NY where he settled. He married my grandmother who was from Geneva NY and brought his remaining siblings to the Rochester area. In many ways he became the sole support of not only his own family but the families of his brothers and sisters as well. He was only 5'2" (with Irish eyes of blue !) but he was a wonderful, clean-living, witty man who died at the age of 87. A product of South Troy. Please add me to your mailing list. I love hearing the stories. Amy LaPietra
