Photo of the Day on March 15, 2008 1943 Mary Cipperly, Anabel O’Reilly in Troy Thursday March 13 2008Troy Record Article 100years ago Friday March 13, 1908 “Judge Wesley O.Howard presides over a habeus corpus hearing in which Nellie Gorman is obliged to show cause why she shouldn’t be compelled to give up custody of her 22 month old son to husband “local sporting man” James Gorman. The sporting man label is usually said referring to a gambling and related activity.. In the divorce hearing the husband is saying he wants custody because she is not fit. Nellie, represented by John P. Kelly, says she has not refused him the right to see the child but he hasn’t bothered since January 1. She says he came spooking about her hall once but did not come in to see the child. James attorney,Thomas F. Powers says he has avoided contact with his son on the advice of counsel. Nellie’s lawyer, requests a delay in the hearing saying his client was only served with the writ at 10:30 last night. The judge allows Gorman to have his son on Sundays and Thursdays from 10-5 pending the outcome of the divorce proceedings. James sister will transport the child on those days.
