Nash protests that his wife left the back door unlocked when she went to get some coal, but could give no reason for serving drinks to the men who happened to enter the place through the accidental opening of the door. After arrested Nash is free on bail. Nally is kept overnight in jail. The patrons are freed after promising to testify at upcoming trials. No one believes those are the only 2 bars open.A sentinel in each instance was placed on duty outside and upon the approach of a policeman, the doors were all locked and the patrons hied to a back room or cellar with instructions to remain quiet until danger of arrest had been averted, a policeman explains to theRecord.
