Donna, I have the four volumes of marriage records for St. Mary's Church in Troy which was founded in 1844 and I checked for your great grandparents and found no record. Do you have any idea where in Troy they lived? There was one Catholic Church older than St. Mary's which is St. Peter's (central part of the city) founded in 1824 and they may have married there. There is also St. Joseph's in South Troy which was established around 1854. I am pretty sure you will not find a civil record at Troy City Hall since they weren't required to register with the civil authorities until around 1880. You could try dropping a line (with a donation) to St. Peter's Church, 2300 Fifth Avenue, Troy NY 12180 or St. Joseph's Church, 3rd & Jackson Streets, Troy NY 12180. I have heard that the secretary at St. Peter's is pretty good about looking up records but the same cannot be said for the secretary at St. Joseph's, but it's worth looking into. Good luck in your search. I may well be on the wrong mailing list for this, and if so I include my apologies. Can anyone tell me about the current situation at St. Brigid's Church in Watervliet, the parish of my KEENAN, LYNCH and HENNESSY families. I found some help there a number of years ago, but then my welcome wore out and I had several painful phone conversations with the guardian of the records - "...they are in the basement and no I will not go there for you ...." Then it got personal. Is St. Brigid's still open, has there been a change in personnel or attitude, was it just me or what. Kathleen, I read of your checking the four volumes of St. Mary's Church in Troy for Donna from Colorado. I hate to impose on your time, but I wonder if you could check for me, when you have a chance. I'm looking for a possible marriage between: Johh O'Brien, (also found as O'Bryan and O"Brian) and Margaret Lynch, around 1853, (family records) They were both born in Ireland and the record I have does not say if they were married in Ireland or the U. S. However, they had twin children, (Michael and Elizabeth, my great-grandmother) born or baptised May 3, 1856 in Troy. I also wonder if St. Peter's would have records I could get info on and how to go about it. I was thoroughly stiffed by the archdiocese when I was there a couple years ago and inquired. Were there other Catholic churches in existence in Troy that early? Also, does anyone know if there was a Catholic church in Green Island that early? I think they lived in Green Island, which I know is part of Albany county. However, all the info I've obtained about Green Island has been through Troy. This includes a listing in the 1854-1855 Green Island city directory, attached to the back of the Troy city directory, for a John O'Brian, carpenter, which was his trade. They did not stay in Troy for long and were in Chicago by the 1860 census and both had died before 1870. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. They are a real dead end! Sorry it took so long to respond to your request. I have checked all the spellings for the O'Brien surname for a marriage in St. Mary's between O'Brien and Lynch and was unable to locate any record for you. St. Mary's was founded in 1843 but St. Peter's is the first Catholic church in Troy founded in 1827. St. Peter's has an e-mail address and you might check with them - churchdenise@aol.com There is only one Catholic Church in Green Island - St. Joseph's and it was founded in 1868. It was recently merged with Catholic churches in Watervliet. The oldest Catholic Church in Watervliet would be St. Patrick's founded in 1840 and is not far from the boundary with Green Island so before there was a church in Green Island, they may have worhsipped in Watervliet. I wish you success in your search.
