Monday March 3, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoTuesday March 3, 1908 “Troy hosts more than 3000 marchers in a monster St Patricks Day parade of local Irish-American organizations this afternoon according to the 1908 Troy Record newspaper.It is Troy's turn to host the annual march of Capital District chapters of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Throughout the city the flag of Erin was draped with the National colors and many homes are handsomely decorated for the occasion.The wearers of the green in honor of ST.Patrick did themselves justice in today's celebration with a big Irish dinner following the parade, at the local Elks lodge.The bill of fare includes real Irish ale with the strength of a gallon in each gill.,bacon and potatoes from the Ould Dart and curly cabbage from the Dells of Down, along with green tea, green ice cream, and similarly tinted party favors. Nationally, presidential candidates are in NYC Delmonico's restaurant.The dinner is a St Patrick dinner of The Friendly sons of St Patrick. Secretary of War William H. Taft talks about how he kissed the blarney stone on a visit to Ireland. Governor Hughes ,who speaks 2nd, says he has no doubt Taft's tale is true but he wishes Taft had taken a picture, referring to the image of the obese secretary of war performing the ritual of kissing the Blarney Stone. This is St Patrick's Day, Judge, and I think you should be a little lenient says Helen Abbott, accused of disorderly conduct with William Ryan at the corner of Congress and Fifth over Ryan's nine dollar debt.Ryan is currently serving 15 days for public drunkenness. Justice Abbott H. Jones recalls her prior conviction for drunkenness. She says That is my only weakness,I've had enough trouble in my day to drive me into prison. I have struggled for the existence of my child and myself and because I sought money that belonged to me I am being punished. Jones sentences Abbott to 30 days in jail and she is led away weeping.
