Wednesday March 19 2008TroyRecord Article100yearsagoThursday March 19, 1908 “Dr. Mary Edwards Walker ,only female recipient of the Medal of Honor from the Civil War (record of only female recipient of the Medal still stands in 2008) was in Troy today at the County Clerks office on undisclosed personal business.The Record reporter interviewed the 72 year old who wore a suit with trousers. In the interview at the Fifth Avenue Hotel Walker credits some of her longevity to the clothes she wears, ‘ No man knows how oppressive the garments a woman wears are to her in her daily tasks. They are burdensome both in the kitchen and in the parlor. They make a womans load heavier in every detail of their lives. I wouldn’t be alive today had I not clothed myself sanely.
