    1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] St. Peters Records
    2. DUCKEECPS via
    3. Years back I spoke to the secretary at St. Peter's. I'm looking for the birth of 5 children (siblings) who were born between 1831 and about 1837. She said they did have baptisms from that era. I had been communicating through e-mail and then I "dropped the ball". I sure would like to try again. One of the 5 is my great grandmother. How would I go about requesting a look up for those church records? Kitty

    3. I only saw this morning or would have posted sooner: Special Tour: The People of Watervliet July 19th, 1:00 $5 per person suggested donation The Shakers’ focus on community and being “in union” sometimes makes it easy to forget that the individuals that lived here had their own histories and, in some cases, baggage. Join us for a special tour of the Shaker cemetery as we bring to life the stories of some of Watervliet’s most influential and interesting residents. This tour will begin at the 1848 Meeting House and we will walk to the cemetery together, just over a quarter of a mile away. Limited parking is available near the cemetery.

    3. Wheeler, Jessie F. Rensselaer County Cemetery Inscriptions. Vol. 2. Albany, NY: New York State Library, 1943. I copied the part of the above with transcriptions from the Old Catholic Cemetery Lansingburgh next to the village cemetery. It has a number of stones that are not in Frances Broderick’s later transcription, and has some additional information about some of the stones she only partially transcribed. I’ve started adding that to findagrave. There’s a couple Powers there. Was the Powers family of Powers park a Catholic family, or was there more than one Powers family in the Burgh? I also started transcribing a long article “Troy's Tombs.” Troy Daily Times. November 12, 1879 and will share it later. Chris

    1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] "Abandoned graves are Cohoes' shame"
    2. Christopher Philippo via
    3. “In addition to the 1900+ cemeteries regulated by the Cemetery Board, the remaining 4000+ cemeteries are municipal, religious, family and private cemeteries, and are generally not subject to regulation by the Cemetery Board or the Department of State.” http://www.dos.ny.gov/cnsl/cemreg.html "I asked the state's Division of Cemeteries about the situation. A spokesman said the agency has no jurisdiction over municipally owned cemeteries, but its interpretation of state law was nevertheless clear: ‘If the city of Cohoes owns the cemetery in the town of Halfmoon, it must maintain the cemetery.' “The city, then, has ignored a legal obligation to maintain the land, along with its moral obligation.” Churchill, Chris. "Abandoned graves are Cohoes' shame." Albany Times Union. July 14, 2014. http://www.timesunion.com/default/article/Churchill-Abandoned-graves-are-Cohoes-shame-5621448.php Does Cohoes own a section in Union Cemetery, in which case they *would* seem to be subject to regulation, or a separate cemetery adjacent to Union Cemetery? If the latter, what exceptions exist to the general rule that municipal cemeteries are not subject to regulation by the Cemetery Board or the Department of State? What agencies do regulate municipal cemeteries and protect people from abuses like municipal mismanagement, abandonment, desecration, or destruction of municipal cemeteries? In order to move the cemetery from Columbia Street in Cohoes to Crescent, the City of Cohoes had to have bills passed by the NYS Legislature and Governor, e.g. “An act to authorize the city of Cohoes to provide for the removal of bodies, monuments and gravestones from the old burial ground, situated on the north side of Columbia street in said city, to provide a suitable place for the reinterment of said bodies; reinter the same, and to reset the monuments and gravestones; to issue bonds therefor, and sell and to convey the lands now used for said burial ground.” If Cohoes instead permitted headstones to be carted away for use as walkways and dumped other headstones in the Mohawk River, the terms of the bills passed by the NYS Legislature and Governor were violated. "The cemetery committee reported that it had caused to be removed 981 bodies from the old city cemetery; that 949 had been reinterred at Crescent, thirteen at Oakwood, twelve at Waterford and seven at Albany Rural. The cost of removal was $2,044.45. There are still three bodies in the old plat. The report was accepted.” “The Old Cemetery.” Troy Daily Times. February 17, 1897: 4 col 4. "Mayor McDonald explained the city purchased the section to relocate the bodies of Civil War veterans of Cohoes previously buried in what is now West End Park on Columbia Street. When the city decided to replace the cemetery with a park, Mayor McDonald said relocation of the graves in the Crescent Cemetery was decided upon. “‘But I can’t see why we should pay this money annually,' the mayor said, 'when we really aren’t getting any use out of it.' “The mayor said that when the bodies and monuments were moved out of Cohoes, the deceased all were buried in one common grave, and the monuments dumped in the Mohawk River en route to the Crescent Cemetery." Tompkins, Bill. “Cohoes Ponder Future of Unused Cemetery.” Times Record. March 19, 1968: 13 cols 3-4. "We did some research on this park and I thought it might be nice to share some of our findings with you. The reason that we were interested in this park is that we live in one of the houses very near the park. One day a few years back I was doing some landscaping in the back yard. I was removing an old slate walk way and replacing it with grass when I unearthed a very old headstone and then a second headstone shortly after. The stones had once marked the graves of 2 small children, one 5yrs and one 21 months. "Curious as to whether we resided on an old cemetery, we contacted our local historian. What we found out was quite an amazing story. This park, known as West End Park, in 1846 was the Cohoes Company Cemetery!” The Neumanns. "Have a Blast!" Geocaching. November 23, 2009. http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC21B9E_have-a-blast?guid=f804723c-d3f2-4709-9924-6f7b47df3813 Incidentally most of the e-mail addresses for Cohoes Common Council members given at http://www.cohoes.com/Cit-e-Access/ContactInfo/?TID=34 (a page with the copyright date of 2009) don’t appear to work. It might be difficult for the Mayor to enlist volunteers if it’s not possible to communicate with him. I did not receive a similar error message with respect to the Ethics Board’s address, however I have not received a reply from them regarding my question “Are there e-mail addresses for the members of I’d tried asking the Division of Cemeteries in the past about what exceptions to the general rule whereby they don’t have jurisdiction over any cemeteries other than not-for-profit ones, but had little luck getting an answer. “In addition to the 1900+ cemeteries regulated by the Cemetery Board, the remaining 4000+ cemeteries are municipal, religious, family and private cemeteries, and are generally not subject to regulation by the Cemetery Board or the Department of State.” http://www.dos.ny.gov/cnsl/cemreg.html Without regulation of municipal, religious, family and private cemeteries one winds up with things like Cohoes moving their city cemetery from Columbia Street in Cohoes to Crescent and then abandoning it, Troy bulldozing the original Mount Ida Cemetery at the foot of Cypress Street, etc. and similar abuses at some religious cemeteries and there’s by and large no consequences. Does Cohoes own a part of Union Cemetery, or its own cemetery next to Union Cemetery? How much of the area did Cohoes actually lay out and use for the reinterments from the Columbia Street City Cemetery and how much was used for later burials of poor or unknown persons? (While the map at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pis&PIcrid=2281947&PIpi=67549562&PIMode=cemetery suggests the entire Cohoes part was laid out, I’m not sure if that was actually done or just a proposal.) Were all headstones moved there from Columbia Street or discarded for use as walkways in Cohoes and/or dumped in the Mohawk River as has been reported? Can Cohoes legally abandon the cemetery as they’ve done, or must they do something about it? If they continue not to do anything about it what are the consequences, if any? > > Some things in the article that aren’t quite accurate: > > “Part of the cemetery is owned by the city of Cohoes, but has fallen into disrepair in recent years” In fact, the city cemetery had fallen into disrepair as early as 1852, well prior to its removal to Crescent. It’s not clear that it was ever in good condition, but Cohoes stopped paying for maintenance in 1952 and it was reported to be “in very poor condition” in 1968 - sunken graves and “overgrown with trees.” Out of sight (and city!), out of mind. > > “She's recorded surnames from tombstones worn nearly clean by time. He recalled seeing only a few crumbling headstones. He mentioned that Joe Konicek (noted in the 7/14/1973 TimesRecord story you referenced http://bit.ly/WdS3tO) and Fr Bill Hayden, pastor of St Patrick's, oversaw the dis-internment and re-internment. He said he had no idea of the number of burials, but that he understood that it had been used at least until 1918, when flu victims were buried there. Unusual that they’d bury Protestants at a Catholic cemetery. It didn’t seem that many bodies were moved in the 1970s and that the area was outside of where the cemetery was thought to be. If it was used from the 1830s into the 1910s not just by Watervliet but also Colonie, I’d except hundreds. http://www.konicekandcollettfuneralhome.com has no records of the 1970s reinterments, unfortunately. I tried writing http://www.fenimoretrace.com/AlbanyRegion/FenimoreTrace.aspx but have heard nothing back. Haven’t tried the developers or the City yet. One of my correspondents sent me something about a tunnel near the intersection of Boght Rd and Haswell Rd he’d seen decades ago, “a brick arch tunnel, probably 5’ high from floor to the top of the arch. The tunnel led in an east-westerly direction” and that one of his teachers had seen “an old oak door built into the side of a hill” in that area. He had no idea what that might have been, nor do I! It would’ve been too far north to be part of the cemetery, though. Chris
