Pam - this page http://tinyurl.com/m2ergst from the May 3, 1939 Troy Times Record has a news story about Harry Powers, but no photo. Maybe a deeper search of fultonhistory.com will get you a photo. Re: Searching For Marriage Records: Here are some suggestions: 1. The TIGS website www.troyirish.com has the following marriage records on-line: a. Marriages Found in a collection at the Burden Iron Co. b. The Troy Newspaper Project. Many different Troy newspaper records. c. West Troy Advocate. d. Rensselaer County Marriages - 60,000 marriages starting in 1908 2. We are currently working on marriages from late 1700's to mid 1800's reported in 10 different Lansingburgh newspapers. Residence of bride and groom is from all over New York State as well as the Troy area. I have the 4,000-5,000 names and can do a look-up if your interest goes back that far. 3. Were your relatives Catholic? The Troy Library has marriage records from the following Troy Catholic churches: St. Patrick's St. Mary's St. Jean de Baptiste St. Lawrence Holy Trinity St. Joseph's 4. On the TIGS website under RESOURCES and then LOOK UP'S IRISH ACTS OF KINDNESS you will find volunteers who have some of the above church books and will do look ups. 5. Reporting of marriages in New York State was effective in 1880 but compliance was spotty in the early years. The Vital Statistics Office of the City of Troy (not the Court House) has information on marriages from those early years but they are expensive, about $22.00 per request. So unless you have a specific year for your request you could pay a lot of money and then find nothing. 6. My recommendation is to try the Syracuse, NY library which has copies of the New York State Vital Records (births, deaths, marriages) on microfiche. They will do a free lookup for you if you send them an email. Their email address is: lhg@onlib.org You need to give them an approximate year date range. 7. If the Syracuse library finds the record they will give you the date, location of the marriage and a reference number. You can then decide to go to the government office in the city where the marriage took place or to the NYS Dept of Health in Albany. It is my impression that the Dept of Health has a more detailed record than the one you would receive from a city like Troy but requests to this agency takes forever for a response. Troy, however, is much quicker to respond. Hope the above helps. Regards, Bill McGrath Clifton Park, NY >I would like to find the marriage records of my parents? Where do I go for > this? Thanks!
Hello Pam: On the TIGS website under PROJECTS you will see the History of the Troy Police Department From 1786-1902. TIGS member Joan Howe in Iowa has the book and will do look-ups but your inquiry is for 1938 which is long after the period covered by the book. I have not heard of any other record of the Troy Police Department. The NYS vital records indexes are at the NYS Archives in Albany. They are on microfiche. If you can find someone to check them for you, they can locate the record and drop off a records request form and $22 payment right at the Archives in the dropbox. These are picked up every afternoon. The certificate will arrive in 2-3 weeks. Dennis Marr In a message dated 9/6/2014 3:35:43 A.M. The reason I am writing is I'mwondering if you can give some advice for a record that my husband and I havelong ago searched for but can't seem to find. It is a marriage license of hisgrandparents: Jan/John STACHURA and Caroline/Karolina GAWRON. They camefrom Poland and went to St. Michael's in Cohoes since there was no Polishchurch in Troy. We went to the church a while ago and the priest looked itup but could not find any record. He did find the baptism of their first child,Anna, July 4, 1904. A couple notes from the Troy Public Library’s scrapbooks, the first of which I’ve excerpted from a typewritten letter there: > The [Trinity Church] burial ground extended formerly (not southward, as your article says, but) eastward. Fifteenth St., formerly Market St., was there when the church was built. Fourth Ave. formerly John St., was not opened until thirty or forty years afterwards. The part of the church yard taken and now under the side walk on the west side of Fourth Ave. is the part where slaves were buried. Dr. C.M. Nickerson, Trinity Rectory, to Jessie F. Wheeler, Philip Schuyler Chapter D.A.R., February 2[0/6/8?], 1917 I hadn’t known their burial ground was reduced in size, though it makes sense that it had been as it is quite small at present. Hopefully the plots now under the sidewalk were moved first! A handwritten note referring to a small family burial ground and burials not recorded in the Rensselaer County Cemetery Database http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyrensse/cemetery.htm > Koon Plot—north of the road which curves west from Winter Street, Troy, and leads into Wynantskill, Rensselaer County New York. He and Sarah are buried in a small private cemetery there on the family farm." http://www.ark-internet.com/tedpat/GER/Kuhn.htm "Does anyone on the Rensselaer County or Columbia County Lists recognize this Sarah Salisbury? (Sarah Salisbury Koon and John Koon were my 4th great grandparents). "Gary A. Craver in Albany County” http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NYRENSSE/2005-03/1111591651 I don’t know if it’s still there. Milton Thomas’ description seems to place it in the same general area as the Van Schaick and Sharpe Cemetery, which was north of Winter Street Extension somewhere between Farrington Avenue and Crestwood Lane. The Van Schaick and Sharpe Cemetery, I was informed, was destroyed by the expansion of the Troy landfill. Chris

To excerpt some points with respect to the cemetery: Hartgen found “no record of burials being removed from this cemetery and reinterred elsewhere” and noted “Archeological excavations in cities throughout United States including local investigations completed by Hartgen in Albany, Colonie, Glens Falls, and Rome, New York have shown that removal and reinterment was rare.” They dug some shallow trenches and found evidence of burials that had never been disturbed, i.e. no disinterments had ever been made for those burials. “The grave shafts were uncovered about 12 inches (30.5 cm) below the current ground surface. Hartgen did not explore the shafts by digging deeper. Also, no human remains, traces of coffins, or coffin hardware were found. This suggests that the burials are intact and have not been disturbed by subsequent activities.” > > Hartgen had marked boundaries with “pin flags and flagging” based on the 1873 Young and Blake map and 1881 Hopkins map. I received a CD from Omni Group of Hartgen Archaeology’s report about the Woodside/former monastery site, addressing the existence of the cemetery. 228 pages total, 25MB in size. TIGS’ webpage about the cemetery is cited, you might be pleased to know! This suggests that the burials are intact and have not been disturbed by subsequent activities.” Hartgen had marked boundaries with “pin flags and flagging” based on the 1873 Young and Blake map and 1881 Hopkins map. I don’t entirely understand their reasoning, since they seemingly put a lot of faith in the exact accuracy of the old maps and the exact accuracy of their overlay. Regarding the ten-foot tall cross: “the size and concrete and iron rebar construction suggest that it is associated with the 20th-century monastery and not the cemetery.” Presumably because they were advising avoidance of the site and because that advice is going to be followed, no exhaustive search was made for grave markers, there was no attempt to determine the location of all the burials within the site, etc. Chris
