    3. Hi, I'm a new member of TIGS researching my mother's family who arrived in Troy in the late 1870's and and 1880's. Specifically, I'm trying to find out more about my grandfather, Thomas Collins, and his family who immigrated to Troy in the 1880's. His brother, James, arrived at about the same time, and I understand two sisters, Ellen and Catherine (married names unknown) also immigrated to Troy. There is a connection to the Mulcahy family (Reverend John Howard C. Mulcahy, was my mother's cousin). My mother indicated that the Collins were a large family. If anyone has information about them, please let me know. Fran Scanlon

December 3, 2011. http://albany.twcnews.com/content/news/565883/civil-war-veteran-honored-with-new-gravestone/ All the headstones supplied by D. W. Whitney during the 1879-1903 period seem to be of this design: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=119028008 They seem especially prone to dirtying, tipping, snapping, and the inscriptions are very shallow and thus tend to be very hard to read. Possibly the shallow inscriptions and seemingly poor quality marble are part of why they lost the contract: > The D. W. Whitney Company of Troy, NY was hired to provide the stones for many states including Connecticut. [3] Their work proved unsatisfactory and in 1881 the D. L. Kemp Company of East Dorset, VT was contracted to complete the work.[4] […] > [3]”Headstones for Soldiers’ Graves: Failure of the Government Contractor.” Hartford Courant, November 11, 1881, p. 2. > [4] Ibid. http://hartfordinthecivilwar.com/wordpress1/2013/07/03/silent-sentinels-civil-war-headstones/ I haven’t yet been able to find out anything about the Whitney company outside of sources pertaining to the contract for veterans’ headstones. Also at St. Patrick’s, other veterans (and some veterans’ spouses) pulled from reports by Albany and Rensselaer County Superintendents of Soldiers’ Burials as included in books of county board of supervisors’ proceedings on Google Books: * Mary Bartley, wife of Andrew Bartley, Co. There’s still more that can be found through “Headstone Applications for Military Veterans, 1925-1963” http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=2375 - that database can, fortunately, be searched by cemetery and the municipality can be entered as a keyword. That search pulls up about 100 veterans at St. Patrick’s. Then there will be still more that could be recorded from the cemetery itself. Seemingly not noted in any of the above sources, for example: Edward Eddie (1843-1883), Ordinance Corps http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=119031275 Quite a lot of servicemen!

Some are of stones I?d already added to findagrave in the past, or that others added, but I?m in the process of adding a number of ones that aren?t there: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSsr=1&GScid=66144&df=1& There?s many stones that are so dirty they can?t be read, or which are partially buried, or are inscription-side down and too large to move. I?m sure there?s many that are completely buried. There?s a number of stones for people from Ireland that indicate their county and parish. There?s also some later burials of Italians and Polish. I wonder if Italian-American and Polish-American groups in the area might have any info about people buried there, or if they might be willing to help with transcription and mapping? There?s also a good many veterans? headstones in the old section, but many of those are among those that are too dirty to read or are partially buried. There?s a new sign for the cemetery near the entrance, alongside all the signs that were already there. It could be more useful if it were nearer the Troy Schenectady Road. With there being no fence and gateway, the entrance is a little hard to spot from the road while approaching it until right at it. There seems to have been recent bulldozing in the back of the cemetery in one of the undeveloped portions, possibly with dirt having been trucked in, and large chunks of cement. The size of the bulldozed area and the amount of dirt seems larger than when I last visited earlier this month. Hopefully they?re being careful because there are some headstones in the woods. Chris

    3. Possibly the vault was rebuilt more than once. There’s some satellite or aerial images of the vault at http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/Halfmoon_NY?disp=2#/lat-42.7356678716282/lng--73.724524083729/zl-19 Click “Road” and select “Bird’s Eye” and use the arrows to the right and left of the compass to rotate the angle of view. I don’t think Billy’s Way, the driveway into Hudson Preserve Luxury Residences, encroached on the cemetery. There’s trees on the east and south sides that probably indicate the historical boundaries. 3. And I think that vault stayed in that condition till just recently when they cleared it and put in that new condo development behind the cemetery and the entry road. I always wanted to go in there as a kid. I walked the cemetery before it went it, and before the condo entry road went in, and I swear that the two overlap and I wonder if any graves are beneath that road. Shameful how bad that back section looked. Never could find my GGgrandfather. He and his wife died in their 40s , 4 days apart in 1879 and left 4 orphans who went to the care of the pastor Fr Sheehan. The court made his executor one of his business creditors , and he took all the money for himself. No grave marker for either of them. So I dont know if they are in St Pats or St Agnes. NOne of the short obits mentioned it, only wake from the residence. I am amazed that vault stayed like that for 100+ years. Also, when my GGgrandfather Thomas Mahoney , whose family all were baptized married and buried at St Pats, was enumerated in 1900 census as "burying grnd supt". I always wondered if it was at St Patricks Cemetery. And if he was the one to blame for "the fire"... that has destroyed every genealogy record I can not find!! No but I think there was a fire that destroyed St pats burials, or so I was told. mike > Date: Tue, 30 Sep 2014 09:18:29 -0400 > To: ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] St. Patrick's Cemetery project > From: ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com > > Mentions of a former vault at St. Patrick’s, roads, superintendent’s home, entryway.
